We know the Longhorns have that mindset. There have been tons of close games this year, and the Horns have won almost all of them.
Last night was a perfect example: down 10-16 in the 4th, and later facing set point at 23-24, we prevail after Juliann blasted four kills in a row and Sha’Dare applied the coup de grace to take the set 28-26.
Restrepo was probably spouting another Yogi Berra quote: "This is like deja vu all over again."
‘Cause remember the earlier match in Oklahoma? In set 2, the Horns were down 21-24, and fought off 6 set points to win the set 30-28. The Sooners must have wondered what it takes to get the ball down on the floor with a set point on the line.
Same deal with Kansas in Manhattan - they thought they might take that first set. But the Horns turned aside two set points to win it, 29-27.
To paraphrase the master, "Volleyball is 90% mental, the other half is physical."
I’m pretty sure Gregory gives John Cook gastro-intestinal distress. We took the tight 4th set, 27-25 to win the match, and maybe it wasn’t a blow-out, but it might have given Cook one.
Five-setter against Long Beach? Book that one for the Horns.
I’m sure the coaches would like a little less drama. You know, more domination, less thrillers. Dunno, I guess our girls like the roller-coaster.
Last example: At Iowa State, the Horns were down 2 sets to 1. The Horns collectively quoted Yogi: "Slump? I ain't in no slump... I just ain't hitting." Dang straight! So they fixed that, and took the match in 5.
What’s the source of our team’s toughness and resiliency? Maybe they were secretly trained in Japan, like the chick in Kill Bill, and learned Bushido, the code of the warrior?
Then again, it’s been said that “Surmounting difficulty forms character.” That may be a part of it.
I do know this: when it gets down to crunch time, our team is very, very tough to beat. And a heck of a lot of fun to watch.
