Saturday’s game at the Erwin Center will match two teams with 2-2 conference records. Both have won their last two games after going 0-2 to start Big 12 play. Both played Nebraska and Texas A&M in those first two games. Iowa State lost 57-49 to Nebraska and 68-44 to A&M. Meanwhile, Texas allowed Nebraska and A&M to score 91 points each while scoring 70 against A&M and 79 against Nebraska. ISU and Texas are both ranked. ISU is 21st in the coaches poll and is receiving votes in the AP poll. Texas is 20th in the AP and 23 in the coaches.ISU brings an overall record of 14-3 to Austin while Texas is 13-5. The all time series between the two is tied at 9-9. The Horns 55-52 win in Ames last season was the only home ISU lost. ISU knocked Texas out of the Big 12 tournament with a 59-55 win with Alison Lacey going off for 25 points.
Stats used are for Big 12 games only unless otherwise noted.
ISU and Texas are polar opposites on offense and defense. ISU is second in team scoring defense allowing 57.2 ppg. Texas is first in scoring offense at 80.2 ppg. Horns are last in scoring defense with opponents scoring 83.8 ppg while ISU ranks last in scoring offense at 53.5 ppg. Historically, ISU has been known as a 3pt shooting team. This year, it is the Horns showing off their 3pt prowess. The Horns are #1 in 3pt FG% at 41.7%. They rank second in the league with an average of 7.5 3s made per game. ISU is in the middle of the pack with 5 3s made per game on 30.3% shooting from BTA.
Alison Lacey (#4, 6-0 Sr. G) is the top player for the Cyclones. She leads the team in scoring with a 21.8 ppg average. Her 48.4 FG % also tops the team. Her FT% of 84.4 (19-22) is first on the ISU squad. Her 37.5% from BTA is second on the team to Amanda Zimmerman’s (#42, 6-1 Fr. F) 57.1%. Zimmerman has taken 7 3s to Lacey’s 16. Lacey is also the top distributor with 3.75 apg. The top rebounder is Denae Stuckey (#10, 5-8 Sr. G) at 6.3 rpg. Stuckey is also the top ballhawk with 1.5 steals a game. Anna Prins (#55, 6-7 Fr. C) is their best shot blocker in Big 12 play with an average of 1 bpg. Lacey is also the only Cyclone in double figures in conference play.
Six players have started at least one game in Big 12 play for ISU. Lacey has started all games for the Cyclones this season, including all four Big 12 games. Kelsey Bolte (#11, 6-1 Jr. G) and Stuckey have started all four league games. Chelsea Poppens (#33, 6-2 Fr.F) has started three conference games, including the last two. Prins completes the current starting lineup, having started the last three conference games. That’s a lineup of 6-0, 5-8, 6-7, 6-1, and 6-2. Pretty decent height. However, that represents pretty much all the height the Cyclones have. Zimmerman is one of two players at least 6-0 on the ISU bench. They have a rotation of eight players that average over 10 minutes a game with another just under at 9.5 mpg.
Texas is led by Brit’s 15.8 ppg. Three other Horns also are averaging double digit scoring in conference play: Kat (12.3 ppg), Erika (11.0 ppg), and Ashleigh (10.5 ppg). Two others are averaging 8.5 and 8.0 ppg. With rounding up, the remaining players all average at least 3 ppg. Kat (8-22, 36.4%), Erika (9-20, 45.0%) and Brit (6-11, 54.5%) are the top 3pt threats although Earnie is 4-8 (50.0%) from BTA. Four players have taken between 9-11 shots a game. Four others are averaging between 4 and 7 shots a game. Makes it hard to focus on any one player to shut down.
Kat is the top rebounder at 7.0 rpg. Ashley and Earnie add 5.8 and 5.5 rpg respectively. Every player except two guards adds at least 2 rpg. Ashley has 14 blocks in Big 12 play. Her average of 3.5 is third in league play. Every player has at least one steal in league play. Six have between 4 and 7 steals. Ashleigh’s 13 assists top the team with two others over 10 assists and one at 9. Every player is averaging at least 10 minutes a game with Kat’s 30.5 average tops. Eight play at least 18 minutes a game.
[pre]Projected starters:
Texas ISU
Ashleigh Lacey
Brit Bolte
Kat Stuckey
Earnie Poppens
Ashley Prins
The 6-7 Prins has not yet established herself as a shotblocker in Big 12 play, averaging only 1 block a game. What is more difficult to tell just from stats is the effect she has on shooting inside. What is obvious is that she is a threat to hit from BTA. She is 8-18 (44.4%) from BTA for the season. Both Ashley and Cokie will need to remember that when she drifts out there. It seems simple with Lacey the most important clog on offense for ISU. Shut her down and ISU is stopped. Only Kansas has accomplished that. But Bolte and Stuckey have stepped up to score when Lacey is having trouble. It may be better to slow Lacey and stop the rest. The problem is that Lacey scoring around 20-30 points has been a good formula since ISU keeps the game at a snail’s pace. Hence the biggest reason for the discrepancy in points allowed and scored by both teams. Horns will want to run. Can they force ISU out of their half court game, which by the way is more geared to get a shot from outside than to get the ball inside. Both games last season were tight games with the teams splitting wins. One difference this season is that the Horns have the 3pt shooters to, not only keep up with ISU, but to overwhelm them. If it turns into a 3pt shooting contest, I like our chances. With Lacey’s size, Brit, Erika, and Kat may be more likely to be assigned to her than our smaller guards.
