Is Tim Duncan a leader?

I think it's a festering load of ****.

Duncan is an intense competitor on the offensive and defensive end. He doesn't need to jump up and down and point to himself. He's got the resume, he's got the championships, he's got his coach and teammates respect. Not everybody leads by being overly vocal. Duncan continues to be the heart and soul of the Spurs, and their offense and defense still revolve around him for the most part. I was amazed at his performance in Game #1 on a knee that will probably require scoping in he offsesaon.

As a Mavs fan, I agree, this is a stupid thread. Tim Duncan has been nothing but awesome and a great leader for the Spurs since he came to the NBA.

Sure he's not a big "ra, ra" guy who will get his teamates pumped up, but there are maybe 3 or 4 guys I would trade him for, even as his career winds down.

He's been the leader of that team for a long time. "Motivating a city" is not a requirement, but, obtw, he has been the #1 guy since the Admiral left and the city seems very thrilled about their success.

Hook'em!!!

I find it funny that people seem to think that because I started the thread, I must agree with the quotes I posted for discussion.

When it becomes important whether a player motivates bloggers and journalists, I will agree that Duncan is lacking in motivational skills. Until then, I'll go with what his teammates say about him.

While I agree that Duncan is a leader...I disagree that being a great player and winning championships equals leader or leadership.

It is a lot easier to stand out in the game of basketball as there are about a dozen players on the team...but I personally don't think I would look at Duncan the same way as a leader if he was on a 53 man football team....thoughts??

He is the most important player on a team that has won 4 recent titles.
I do think that it takes a great leader on the floor to accomplish that feat.
Duncan IS a leader. He may not yell and jump around but he is always talking to them. He is also a great leader by example and considering how his past and present teammates respect him. They probably also play a little harder so as not to let him down.

Duncan is a leader. He just doesn't get fired up and his game isn't electrifying. He's just calm, cool, and collected. You don't always have to be fired up to be a leader. Sometimes you can just be an efficient machine and demoralize the enemy.

"We're gonna win. We know it. You know it. There's nothing you can do about it." - German soccer and SA Spurs basketball.

TexJake has it right.

It's a silly debate. Anyone trying to argue that he is somehow NOT a leader is biased and probably has a media generated opinion of what a leader is supposed to look like.

I wouldn't trade TD for any "leader" in the NBA in the last 15 years.

Hmmm... Is Tim Duncan a leader:

1. Stayed all four years in college
2. Has a college degree.
3. Never been arrested or in trouble with the law
4. Hasn't ever choked his head (or any other) coach
5. Hasn't thrown anyone through a window
6. Hasn't ever really even been seen drinking in public
7. ALWAYS after a loss says "I" played poorly or I should have ... he never calls out his teammates or blames anyone else.
8. ALWAYS after a win says "the Team" played well or "the team" deserves the credit ...
9. Four rings
10. Doesn't have any children that were not with his wife
11. Started the Tim Duncan Foundation with his wife -- a charity that gives hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities.
12. Assists with fundraising for Beat Cancer
13. Has a charity golf tournament every year
14. Has a block of 40 tickets to every home game that are all donated to charitable organizations
15. Four rings
16. Four rings

This is a man who lives his life the right way. He leads by example. He never ever seeks the limelight or seeks accolades for his on or off the court endeavors. If this man is not a leader, one does not exist.

I was going to say that. Well I certainly agree.

A good leader is one who inspires others to do their best. Tim does that.

+1

I don't know what more anyone could want from a player..This is what pisses me off about the NBA and NFL, there are plenty of solid guys like this, but they are never talked about. All we ever hear about are the dumbasses like Iverson and Vick.
