Is Tilman regretting the Applewhite-Holgorsen shenanigans

Is it scary that I was just about to post a similar thread?

Last time I talked to Coog friends, they were claiming that 2019 was an aberration. They will without question blame 2020 on covid. Personally, I think they #^%$ the bed by ditching Major so early.

Perhaps we could trade TH for DH?

Don’t want DH :puke: That’d be like Sark only going to half his AA meetings with a messed up haircut and sweatin’ like Patterson.

I guess I’ve slept since then. Could someone provide me a synopsis of the Applewhite-Holgorsen shenanigans?

Major went 7-5 in 2017 as UH head coach replacing Herman.
Major went 8-5 in 2018 as UH head coach. Tilman Fertita lobbies hard to fire Major and hire Holgorsen and declares that you don’t deserve to coach at UH if you have more than 3 losses. Part of why Major went 8-5 in 2018 is Ed Oliver opting out of the final games to ensure NFL draft health. Dana went 4-8 in 2019.
Dana went 3-4 in 2020.

The following was actually Renu Khator, UH President but I believe Tilman echoed the same sentiment.

"The winning is defined at University of Houston as 10 and 2," she told faculty and staff at the annual holiday party at her home. "We'll fire coaches at 8 and 4."

Renu is a brilliant woman. But she really %$#^&@ up with that decision.

UH was an early case of shitting the bed by deferring to the players and not leading.

If I was a hot coach at a backwater school, I would run such a dictatorship that calling me Hitler would be an improvement over Pol Pot.

I mean if you can’t learn the limits of your power at a small school, how will you know when to pull back at a bigger school?

Interestingly, Major took some heat for standing up to Oliver. If memory serves, Ed declared he was opting out but was still on the sidelines for the last few games. And at that point, Major had a policy that only players could wear long "UH" branded coats on the sidelines.

When Ed attempted to put one on, Major wouldn't allow him to wear it. The cameras caught Oliver screaming at Applewhite on the way to the locker room. Evidently Ed was upset about not being able to put the long coat on. Major was caught replying with "Shut the #$% up" to Oliver.

Clearly, I'm biased. And just as clearly, Maj has heat with some UT alums. But he showed a lot of backbone with the situation.

He shouldn’t have been on the sidelines to begin with. I am all for giving players latitude, but when they abuse the freedom, what is the point of giving latitude? This is why coaches are little hitlers.

I remember that game. Oliver was screaming at Major and waving his arms about as they were walking. Didn't know til now what Major said to him.

Maybe we should consider Major. I think he would embody the traditions and draw the line in the sand toward the woke generation. I don't know if he would win us a natty, but I feel pretty good that he would point the ship in the right direction, rebuild relations with fans and donors. Give him a 3 year deal and see what happens. I almost guarantee he'd have the program in better shape from top to bottom in 3 years.

Maybe. I wouldn’t bet against him. I think it’s unlikely that others would give him a shot given that Ark St OC and S Ala OC were the only opportunities that opened for him. I don’t know why that would be, given that his record at UH was good with only 2 years in.

He may just be too young. It takes time. IMHO he should be a HC at a small school, later on. Maybe Rice or similar. I like Major. Sounds like he has grown up since his indiscretion at UT.

Most glaring is the QB from San Antonio that he told Saban was the next Joe Namath. That cost him his job in Tuscaloosa. Kid wound up as a backup (third string I believe) at Rice.
Google says you're referring to Nick Fanuzzi . His bio contradicts your memory.

Looked him up, and not sure how it is a contradiction. He started the last four games for Rice in year 4 or 5, after the starters got hurt. He played well in those games, BUT there is a huge difference in beating North State or UTEP and being a Hype$man Candidate for Alabama beating Auburn, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, et al.

I like Major as a person. Not so much as a coach.
