Is This Residential Fence Estimate Too High??

Nothing fancy (I thought):

1) Install 40' of spruce wood fencing 4' high w/metal posts and one pedestrian walk gate with self closing springs &
2) Install 14' of Delgard aluminum fencing 4' high to include one pedestrian walk gate with self closing springs =

$2,092!!

I was not expecting that, but there is no way I am going to do it myself. Should I shop it around more, or just put it off until I hit the lotto Saturday night?

54 feet of fence w/2 gates for $2,000. Well at almost $40 per foot I'd say the guy should be holding a gun, because that's robbery.

Get some more quotes. I'm not an expert on the subject, but you should be able to cut that price by 50-75%.

8 foot panels of fencing 6 feet high costs roughly 35$ at the home improvement places. Metal poles are about 6 bucks I think. Sounds like a ripoff to me. Maybe he is charging out the *** for the aluminum fencing.

Spruce isnt anything special is it?

I rebuilt about 60 feet (took down everything except the wood posts) of a 6 foot high fence for just under $10 a foot. I used pressure treated pine for the rails and cedar (probably at least twice the price of spruce) for the pickets. I used deck screws rather than nails. The estimate you got seems high. You must appear rich or naive. Always get three estimates.

I will do it for 10% les than that!

We just had a small section replaced and a gate added. Metal poles and the regular (non-cedar wood) and I think our quoted price was like $12.43 a foot or something like that.

Now I might ask if you have to go directly into rock ro make the holes as that could be a biggie. If you are in someplace like Houston where the ground is like butter then you are getting smoked.

I just had a chap put in about 120' of six-foot privacy and 160' of four-foot chain link with a gate for each section, the chain link gate being a double gate. Total cost was $2035.

Thanks for the general guidance and price references. I am sure that I appear rich based on the neighborhood and the house I am borrowing from the bank. I told him to work a cheaper deal and he is going to see what he can do to cut the price . . . we'll see. It is a pretty big fence company in Dallas, which I normally would avoid, but they were responsive and returned my calls, which is more than I can say for the mom-and-pop outfits I have called so far.

My quote comes in at $2050. Look, I will even throw in a 29 day warranty. Also, A nice little travel size coffee maker and bean grinder.

If they dont have to remove an old fence, then the wood fence should be no more than $15.00 a foot plus maybe a $100-$125 for the gate. The chain link fence and gate should be cheaper per foot.

These are the prices in the Houston area. Hope it helps.

Thanks all. Dropping the metal posts and hardware lost $493 (wtf???), so we are still at $1,599. There is no old fence, dogs, or sun involved, so it should be a piece of cake and I figure that the guy should be paying me. I think that I will toss a coke at the guy's grandma and hit the yellow pages.
