Is the Men's Gymnastic Team Getting Robbed?

I'm no gymnastics expert but the US team is sticking all their landings and doing very well but the Chinese team is stepping out and struggling on the landings. Their stuff is more difficult but why are they getting higher scores for execution?

That was some serious home cooking. But, not unexpected. China will do just about anything to ensure victory in gymnastics on their home turf. The 12-year olds on the women's team is proof of that.

To answer the op, yes the new scoring system favors more technically difficult routines. The scores after the first and second rotations reflected their poor execution (they were in like 5th place overall). However, as with all countries, there are certain events each team is stronger in and they did really well toward the end.

The US didn't get robbed from anything, the team did a great job to hold on to the Bronze.

Sure took the judges a while to score the rings event. I also noticed that the judges had access to laptops so they could replay an exercise at different speeds for further analysis. Given today's technology, it seems that exercise routines could be graded by a computer, taking away any human subjectivity. Think it will ever happen?

That the judges can replay the routine over and over is ********. If they are going to do that, why not just let each competitor send in a video of their best performance and have the judges review them in a little room?

I don't like what's happening in gymnastics judging. I don't like it at all.

That why gymnastics isnt a sports but more of a performance. Others include ice skating, diving, and snowboard half pipe to name a few. Sports have definitive measures. Note that I didn't say these guys weren't athletes.

They should divide the Olympics into 2 competitions. One for actual head to head competition, and the other for athletic artistry that is scored by judges.

Also, those 2 US guys were nails on the high bar. And the highest they got was a 9.3 for execution. China was getting higher execution scores even with stumbling landings. And don't get me started on the judging for synchronized diving.

Well, since I know nothing about it but the US announcer was gushing over the chicoms and wasn't upset by our scores I'm going to assume we weren't getting robbed.

Not that I could tell a damn bit of difference in routines in say, the parrallel bars from one guy to the next, one team to the next.

Gymnastics like diving has so much subjectivity and judgement in scoring. It is like the English teachers and professors that grade themes. They can give anyone whatever grade they want.

I hope y'all realize that it's a little bit more than just sticking a landing the determines a score. Every little thing counts. Toes that aren't pointed, slightly bent knees, not holding certain moves long enough, not going straight up to a handstand smoothly, etc.

Wait till you see the Women's Gymnastics finals (I think it is tonight or tomorrow night). See who gets robbed. Watch and see how old you think some of those Chinese women (girls) are. The rules say you have to be at least 16 to compete. Don't get me wrong I think those rules are silly but they are the rules. See what you think tonight (or whenever the finals are).

Did anyone see Bob Costa interview Bella Karolyi on Sunday night? He certainly felt there was a significant bias by the Gymnastics judges against the US.

That was hilarious, Bela accused the chinese of cheating and providing fake passports or something and bob cut him off...

Bob and the NBC network are just trying to be Politically Correct and are avoiding the issue and burrying their heads in the sand. It is sort of like peoplel that knew where Bonnie and Clyde were but kept quiet and didn't want to get involved.

What really bugs me with the new scoring system is the fact that certain disciplines count more than others. In the individual all-aroud it's not as big of a deal because each person has to go on all the routines....But in the team competition if one team is stronger on pommel and another is better on vault....Why should the team that's doing vault automatically have an advantage? Our guy had the most amazing pommel routine I've ever seen and yet because of the scoring of that discipline he gets a low overall score even if its a high score for that disicipline. Very frustrating.
