Is the fix in for W/C 2022

World Cup 2022, the US has by far the best bid which will make the most money and give the most fans a chance to see the games in person but somehow Qatar (yes Qatar) appears to be in the lead. WSJ has story this morning about the fix maybe being in (sorry couldnt find on line version). So with 24 hours to go, a lot of anxious times for US Soccer.

This seems to be an organization rife with corruption, graft, bribes and who knows what else. There is big money in this announcement, and not all of it may be out in the open. Qatar may be paying their money under the table.

I guess they will have to move the summer dates for Qatar worlc cup, the avg. summer temperature is about 105-110. what a freaking joke. How many BJ's did Qatar pay for so the FIFA members would grant them the tourney. I though surely a european country or us would get one bid.

Qatar? really? I have no problem with Russia in 2018. That actually makes some real sense.

Qatar has 1.7 million people as of the 2010 Census. Qatar has count 'em 1 major city. 2 major airports... Wow. general already mentioned the fact that it is entirely too hot to play football during the summer months in Qatar, which means either entirely indoor venues, or changing the entire dates of the WC.
I am not that outraged that the US didn't get awarded the games...but Qatar makes less than 0 sense.

Total fricking Crock.

Fifa once again proves itself to be the most openly corrupt organization in sport.

Russia was my least favorite choice for 2018, Qatar was obviously my least favorite choice for 2022.

Qatar is smaller than Connecticut and, as mentioned, has one city of note. And they're going to build ten large, air-conditioned stadiums? Madness. By comparison this makes Formula 1 coming to Austin seem completely reasonable and believable.

Qatar has no bars save a few ones in the hotels. It'll be the first dry WC.

And what time of year is it compared to Ramadad? Public eating is not allowed then during daylight hours, save again the hotels.

What a farce. Another soccer bribe-fest.

i would really like to see every country just decide screw it, we are not sending a team. the champions league is a bigger deal to me anyway. the world cup games have gone down hill and have not been very entertaining in decades.

What bigs me is not so much the US losing, but that it was Qatar. If not us then Australia was a natural choice. Now you have a world cup in a country smaller than Connecticut where everyone is on top of each other. Are there even enough hotels, restaurants and bars to handle everyone staying in the same city. They are going to quadruple at least the population of that country for a month which is unprecedented. And all that in the middle of summer in the desert in a country where I'm pretty sure it is still against the law to be Jewish or drink alcohol. Just makes no sense at all.

Ive seen shots that bad in professional league play. He just pulled it. Also, if Quatar is THAT small, which it is, what kind of depth or quality could they possibly have?

I agree that giving it to Quatar makes no sense. Saudi Arabia would make a hell of a lot more sense. They are our supposed friend.

Russia actually is gonna be cool, but I am shocked that its not going to Europe in 2022 if not the US. But lets face it, the anti-American view is pretty pronounced.

12 years off is a long way though guys. The US might not exist in 12 years. Not likely, but lets get this economy somewhere back in the neighborhood of functioning without pumping trillions of made up dollars into it.

The basis of the US bid was "We really are a footballing nation, really, we are. And if you don't believe us, look at how much money we can make you."
It is pretty obvious that FIFA likes "look at what lengths we will go to stage the world cup."

Other than not having the world cup played within three hours of my doorstep, I have no issue with either choice.

The First 68 years worth of world cups were either played in the Americas or Western Europe. Last I checked, it was the World Cup, not the Western World Cup. The next 20 years will see the cup go to the Far East, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. I think that's pretty cool.

I recently read an article on Qatar's bid to host. I noticed that they are talking about mainly expanding and converting existig stadiums in the country... expanding the to about 40 to 45k capacity. Really? That seems AWFULLY tiny for all the WC stadiums to be that small.
