Is soul of the Republican party worth fighting for

I'm not a Republican, but I'm with Ron Paul and against Rick Santorum on every issue cited. I'm a man without a party but I guess the Republicans piss me off more often because I don't see many Democrats around southern Denton County.

I have long since dropped the Republican label and simply consider myself a conservative. Those groups are NOT synonymous. However, as a conservative it's hard to vote federally against republicans when the democratic counterparts are campaigning socialism. I would have a much easier time leaning blue if I could find true fiscally conservative democrats. There are a few that are categorized as blue dogs but are only "conservative" when compared to drastically extreme party members.

I don't want a third party- I want a group of Republicans and Democrats that work together and I will vote for members of either party. They do exist, they just get trampled on by the extremists in both parties.

Hardly. Both Bush presidencies were known for working with and compromising with Democrats. What they got in return was extremely personal vilification. There's very little benefit to compromise.

McBrett, if a conservative makes any real attempt to address the real problems we have today, they're immediately called a racist or a science denier, or worse. So please explain to me the benefits of compromise with a group of people that use such tactics.

All I want is a group of politicians who believe in the founding principles of this country as set forth in our Constitution.

Limited federal governmental power (and massively less federal spending - on the order of 30% of it's current level), with far more autonomy for each of the separate states.

Whether those politicians wear an R or a D behind their names matters not a bit to me.

As it stands right now, NO!! You've got too many fake dems in GOP clothing to serve the conservative cause. The only way to save/rebuild is to let it dang near die. The principles are still there, but the people have hijacked the cause. Democrat lite/Compassionate Conservatism has led us to this. There is no reason, why the real ideals of the conservative base, should not be more appealing to masses. What person worth a hoot, doesn't want the chance to succeed without the burden of the 'Beast' on their back? The messengers suck!!

Maybe it's time for a Conservative party, where people, who give a damn about the issues can go. NO FAUX OUTRAGE allowed. We may not agree on the social issues, but if our system collapses, nobody's marriage/right to choose will matter. The Tea party was a start, but it was quickly hijacked.

The time to compromise was 15 Trillion ago!!!

O'Neil played hide the turtle with Reagan.
They did the same thing to Bush Sr.

No more compromise on spending, balanced or nothing!!!

All other issues are so far secondary, you probably could get most of what you wanted, as long as it does not cost money.

I always love how everyone says compromise this, compromise that, the most famous compromise in this country continued slavery for 70+ more years and eventually led to the death of over 1 million men in this country.

Compromise for the sake of compromise is a disaster. Sometimes the point of not compromising on something is so the other side does not compromise on something that is important to you.

Shiner, Sangre, Brotha-

You guys are stating your views and you are clearly more than welcome to. I don't want to side track the conversation about the issues you are raising- but FYI I agree with you on some things and disagree with you on others.

There is only one point I am constantly trying to make with you all: Your views are not shared by a majority of the American population, nor a majority of Congress- and NEVER ever will be. I don't care how much conviction you have- the MATH will never add up for you or your causes. Hey- I have a few causes that I'd like to happen too that never will.

Your energy, and the well being of the country is much better served getting as close to your views as possible while moving forward. One of you said we should 'dang near let the country collapse' and then everyone will come around to your side. No, sorry, that will never happen. Not even close.

No party has ever had say more than 65% of Congress at best in history- and even then they still didn't get all of what they wanted. Since 1990- our country has voted close to 50/50 very consistently. Even if it moved 10 points to 60/40, the majority party STILL would have to compromise to get bills passed.

This isn't about your issues you care about- this is about Congressional mathematics. It's a decision you can figure out with a piece of paper if you want to maximize your ideas. Because, if your idea is to stand your ground- not only will you never get what you want- you f up the country, and still nothing changes.

A majority of Americans recently elected a man to be President of the United States who had never run so much as a lemonade stand. Excuse me if I'm not terribly concerned what a majority of Americans think anymore. When the country is bankrupt, will they notice. I suppose they will when the unemployment checks bounce or just don't get delivered.

Rememeber when the libs used to love John McCain? They would praise him and talk about how he was a maverick and liked to buck the party, and how much respect they had for him. Then he ran for president, and apparently immediately turned into a GWB stoolie. Weird how that worked.

McBrett, 2 things.

The topic was about saving the Republican party, and that was what my answer was geared towards. In order for the GOP to be a real conservative option, the deadweight needs to be trimmed/run off. If that means the party has to take a temporary hit, then so be it. We've tried the kinder, gentler theme, and it didn't work.

2nd, you are probably right about half the country not agreeing with me. The numbers prove it. Higher dropout rates, higher single parent homes, higher abortions and dozens of other examples of our society moving towards a more liberal/feel good/10 minutes of fame approach. More compromise is not the answer, because the more you give the more the other sides want/take.

Now, I know you won't agree with me, just because. But, take a look around at our society and tell yourself, we don't need more conservative values. And I'm not talking about gay marriage or abortion. I'm talking about people having pride in themselves and their families. Folks trying to live their American dream instead of living in a dream.

I wish we had a politician who came out as a IDGAF conservative. Because, if you don't give a F, then I don't either.
