Is Savage next?

Is it too early to start talking to John Savage (UCLA) for the Baseball Coaching position?

I would be delighted to have Strong, Smart, and Savage for the three major sport coaches.

I would be even more delighted to keep Augie Garrido as our baseball coach for as long as he chooses to coach. I think he's the best coach on The Forty Acres right now....period. Yes, and that includes our great swimming/diving coach, Eddie Reese, although he's spectacular, as well. There are just so few schools who compete in swimming and diving compared to baseball. It's, therefore, hard to compare the sports.
I can't imagine anyone wanting our University to part ways with Augie.

Jarrett Elliot VB coach has ONE NC (2012), FIVE Final 4s in the last 7 years & NINE straight years at least into the great 8.

Skip Johnson has kept the baseball program from going downhill the past several years. He is in complete charge of the pitching staff, he does all the recruiting and decides how to use the excellent talent, he has amassed over this time period. Last season was probably as good a job as any assistant coach has done in my memory, of taking a team that was on the ropes and getting it to Omaha. Then the pitching in Omaha was just outstanding. The already very good pitching, just got better and better, without much help at all offensively. It's been the trend for 4-5 years. He's worked through several injuries also at times to French, Peters, Curtis, Hollingsworth, and a key season ending injury to Morgan Cooper. He would have been either the elusive closer the team needs, or a solid starter in the rotation.

Skip should be given the head coaching job for what he brings as a pitching coach alone, but he can handle the other aspects of the job also. If he doesn't get the job, he will be gone to a college that recognizes this, or hired as a pitching coach by a MLB team. He is sought out by Cy Young Award winning pitchers, as well as other pros, for his guidance and coaching. Recruits see this and want to come here for that type of coaching, who wouldn't. You wouldn't need a Pitching Coach with Skip at the helm. So you could hire two other coaches to handle and recruit position players and hopefully jump start, what has been a woeful offense for so long.

He is one of, if not the best, in the college game and recognized as such. Good luck replacing him if he is not hired. Think where this program would have been without him, the last several years, with the lack of hitting it has had. It's still going on this season, at this point, with Texas being the worst hitting team for average in the Big 12.

We're not off to a good start, but we are coming off of a third place finish in the CWS. Let's stable the stallions on firing any baseball coaches for now.

Yes, and I just outlined how we accomplished that third place finish. I'm just saying when the time comes, that Skip should be the replacement. Not asking for a firing of Augie.

Looking down the road is one thing, but Augie is a college baseball icon and should be allowed to stay until he's ready to hang it up. 5 NCs, over 1900 wins. I like to see him get to 2000 wins and retire when he wants, wearing the burnt orange and not from some other program.

He has two more years left on his contract, after this year. That should get him to 2000 wins, without a total collapse.
At the end of the contract, he will be 79 years old.

Geesh, you guys need to recalibrate your sarcasm meter. VTKiller wasn't trying to run Augie out. He was just commenting on how cool it would be to have three major-sport coaches whose names are desirable traits (Strong, Smart, and Savage).

Perhaps there is a Coach Quick out there for the track team? Or a Coach Small for the equestrian team?

I'd definitely say there's plenty of reason (77 of them at least) to be thinking of a succession plan for Augie, having nothing to do with how his team is doing.

Skip should be given the head coaching job for what he brings as a pitching coach alone.

Once again, NBHorn7 speaks the truth. For how capable he is and how hard he has worked while at Texas, Skip definitely needs a shot at the head coaching job once Augie retires.
