is my new tree dead?

I planted a japanese maple in the shade at my house in houston a month ago. The trunk itself looks to be fine, but the leaves are hard and withered. I wonder if this could be from the extreme rain we just had.

Any plant experts have any thoughts? THanks.

Scratch the bark. If it's green underneath, tree is alive. If not, tree is probably dead.

Could be transplant shock. Or if it dried out between waterings, you're boned.
