Is Manu on the trading block?

They ought to deal them both. Manu and Tony. Manu isn't going to last much longer, Tony won't resign, Tim will only play a few more years (at most) and Pop won't coach without Tim. NOW is the time to do it. They won't be serious threats next year imo and they will/should try to avoid earning a lottery pick for economic reasons.

What is the rumored trade? For some reason my work computer has me blocked from viewing that link and the home computer is in the shop.

That trade is so one sided benefiting the Spurs. To me it would be like the Rockets trading Barry for Kevin Garnett and a lottery pick: What franchise is that dumb?

Pitter,

Since your link doesn't work, The story is along these lines.

Some say The Wizards are said to have an offer for Manu Ginobili on the table, but the details are not known. Some say A deal that makes a lot of sense for both sides is a swap that consists of Mike James, Etan Thomas, the fifth pick in this year's draft, and Nick Young for Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto. Some say that Nick Young would provide the Spurs with the promising young shooting guard they tried to acquire in J.R. Smith and with the fifth pick they could go a number of different ways. Others thoughts include that Jordan Hill or DeMar DeRozan would look awfully nice in a Spurs' uniform.

A healthy Ginobili is better than Young or James. The Spurs have three big question marks for next year in the health of Manu, Tim, and Drew Gooden, but if those all come through they will be right in the thick of things just like 2007 and 2008, and like they would have been in 2009 without those 3 health problems.

I think they need to find a big (unless Gooden is the answer there.. the verdict is still out), a perimeter player who can create their own shot off the dribble (we have too many spot up shooters, Mason, Bowen, Finley et al are all incapable of beating defenders off the dribble) and, maybe most importantly, a backup PG who can run the second team and give us something while resting Tony. We really haven't had a solid backup PG in the TP era. Can we wait on the rook to develop? I worry about the minutes Tony has to play, especially with all of our injuries. We ask a hell of a lot from the guy and his style over an 82 game season is much more difficult on the body than most PGs in the league.

I am reluctant to trade Manu, but admittedly that reluctance comes from the idea of a healthy Manu (and my fondness for the guy). But my fear is that he will never again be able to go 82 games + playoffs healthy. His style, like Tony's, adds so much more wear and tear than the avg player.

But I am a tad curious about any trade that gets us into the lottery or brings in some solid young players. I don't know much about the guys mentioned in the trade, to be honest, but I am open to the idea... as hard as it would be to trade the guy.

That trade I would make in a heartbeat. You get younger and more athletic right away (assuming Manu is hurt every year) and Thomas is certainly better than Oberto. And Uninformed, a franchise like Memphis (remember Pau Gasol's trade) would make that trade, easily.

I doubt they trade him. He would be invaluable even if it was coming off the bench at some point.

What they really need to do is add another scorer. They would opt for a perimeter scorer like Turkoglu or somebody that can dribble pentrate and give them back what they miss when Manu is out. If Ariza isn't resigned what a steal that would be.

And Turkoglu got a much larger deal than SA was willing to give. I believe he was a free agent the summer before Tony and Manu came up and they knew they needed the $.

I think Hedo is a bit overrated and is going to get paid more than he's worth. Not that a team like SA that's almost there but needs one or two other role pieces wouldn't love to have his 3-point shooting, but the Magic have an offense perfectly suited to his offensive game. A dominant post who commands attention to open up shots for multiple good 3-points shooters, but nobody that's a dangerous threat to take the ball to the rim from the outside. I know most people here don't follow women's basketball but it reminds me a lot of some of the recent OU teams and how Jenna Plummley was in a perfect position to look like a really good PG by just dribbling down, passing away to start the offense, and standing around waiting for open 3s.

Turkoglu was about an 8 ppg scorer before coming to Orlando. He was the 7th best player with the Kings and never really found his place with the Spurs despite starting about half the games. Did his ppg go up in Orlando because he made big strides in his game, or just because he got more chances to score? Instead of being the #7 or #5 option, now he's often the #2 to #4 guy. He might just not quite be that good where a team is going to win a championship with him as one of their top 3 scorers.

I don't know if he would be a #2 scorer or not. But he would only help a team at this point in his career. In SA Duncan and Parker are the clear #1 and #2 guys and that will not change. Adding an outside shooter like Turk in my mind would only give you another scorer and one that can compliment the inside game of Duncan and the dribble penetration of Parker.

I think the Spurs have hit that point where they are just good enough to keep from getting draft picks that will help them improve in a serious way... but not good enough to contend for the title.

hornpharmd - I agree with that, I just think his stats in Orlando will mean he's going to command a higher salary than his contributions to most teams would justify.
