going to playa on sunday. dean is headed that way.

i do see some chance of rain. paying 5K for a vacation to the carribean, only to be in the rain that finally stopped in texas is teh suck.

Too early to know. The models are all over the place.

But right now they have it as a CAT 4 hurricane just off Playa by Monday.

A good place for up to the minute guessing on Dean's track:

i booked the airfare through orbitz. i guess if i call the airline directly, they MAY let me cancel and get travel credit, which i can use to book last minute somewhere else.

JESUS CHRIST!

the hotel will bill me for 2 nights with tax for cancelling now. that is $748/night.

i'd still be getting a bunch of money back, so i could jsut eat the fee and go somehwere else. the thing is this storm could turn, and i'd be pissed. of course, i can not wait any longer (past tomorrow), or i'll b screwed on an alternate plan.

jsutnspoke to hotel lady in mexico. she says that if a hurricane is due to hit, they'll refund 100%.

however, right now, they have it as "blue". not sure if that's their ******** code or if it corresponds to some weather map color.

she notes that "right now, it's not a hurricane. it's a storm." I am advised to call back tomorrow. of course, if the answer is the same tomorrow, i have a decision to make.

where shall i go as a substitute?

we'll have about 860 in airline credit, if my assumptions about their policies are correct. we'll have $3800 in leftover money after the hotel takes their chunk, fomr that payment which has already be made in full (policiy). if they have it as a hurricane, we'll be due back $5236 for the room.

so, i need to fly 2 ppl. somewhere badass for those price ranges on last minute notice. I guess we could go to NYC, since we've never been, or chicago, which i've barely been to, and loved. for that kind of money, we could do it up right in one of those places.

vegas is not an option, since i'd come out way behind $$$ wise, if we insisited on having a full 7 night trip, as planned. of course, we could do 3 nights in vega, and i could use the prior $$$ for gambling, which would be about sufficient. however, I'm going to vegas in oct. for a seminar with the wife already, so there's that to think about too.

Tell the woman at the hotel there is a partial east eyewall and a central dense overcast forming over the center -- Dean will a hurricane soon and right now it is going to knock the **** out of her little piece of paradise.

What about Cabo?

It is easy for a credit card to fight said charges if "resort" no longer exists.

2 years ago I was working with a girl whose best friend (and best friend's wife) were in Cozumel when Cozumel, Playa, y Cancun got hit like *******.

The guy spent a few nights in a shelter and it was a fight to get the flights out of there once they got the all clear. I think that that was the last time that they were going to go there.

suerte dude

i'm calling in the am to the hotel to se if they got the official government warning.

if not, they have agreed to waive the 2 night cancellation fee (over $1400), and instead, merely charge a 10% fee, about $500, which I will deal with.

After airline cancellation fees, we'll have about $800 in credit with continental. their flight selection sux for vegas on sunday-friday. and, their fares suck for last minute. Thus, I will retain said credit. I will immediately book my flight to Orlando, and maybe even omaha next year (who knows).

then, I will book, via orbitz, roundtrip for two to vegas on sunday afternoon. it will cost me $720 for both of us, which is not too painful.

then, tomorrow afternoon, we will go to the bank, and withdraw every single dime of the refunded money from the resort, about$4800 or more.

then, we will take the spending cash i'd stashed over the past couple of weeks, and put it in said pile.

then, I'll call venetian, and book a room. as i may have posted, 5 nights will cost me $640.

then, we head there for five nights. we will spare no expense. we will se shows, shop like idiots, and **** hookers. maybe not the last one.

my thinking is that we planned this trip months ago. the $$$ has been gone from my account for quite a while. it's a "sunk cost".

this whole turn of events is horrible, so we're going to maket the best of it, and really do vegas up big.

i shall now start another thread about suggestions for cool vegas **** for us to do.

Two years ago we had to cancel our trip to Jamaica when that same hurricane came through, and we switched it to Cabo San Lucas instead. We had booked all-inclusive through Fun Jet vacations, and we bought the hurricane insurance (which at the time I thought might be a bit of a rip-off). I sure am glad we bought that insurance. I'll never plan a trip to the Caribbean during hurricane season without it again.

The place we stayed in Cabo was an all-inclusive resort and it was pretty good. Not as nice as the one you were planning on (the Royal I think?), but not bad either. The wife wanted a beach vacation, I tried the Vegas idea and she didn't go for it.

I can't remember the name of the place we stayed, but it was in the fairly recent, government-sponsored hotel resort area. If you have a travel agent they should be able to tell you.

You are probably having this bbq on Saturday because I will be out of town. Fine, I hope it rains.

Scott, we went to Cabo for our honeymoon and stayed at the Sheraton Hacienda. Great hotel, amazing time. No change of hurricanes there (I guess they arne't even called hurricanes there).

But my understanding when planning the trip is that all-inclusives in Cabo are not that widespread and the ones that have them aren't that great (ie, you would prefer to leave the hotel to eat). Our hotel did not offer all-inclusive but it wouldn't have been worth it. We mostly went to town during the day. The beach (unless you stay at Melia San Lucas) are not swimmable. Well they are but very very strong. The beach was gorgeous and we hung out a bit but mostly at our hotel pool. And the beer prices weren't ridiculous.

But we mostly went to town to Playa Medano (public beach) and hung out at Mango Deck and the Office drinking 2 for 1 drinks until a bit before sunset.

I went to Cancun in late August 2003 with some friends but we planned it around other things and didn't find out until later that was hurricane season. We lucked out, no bad weather at all.

I am going to Cancun in late October (Baylor weekend) for a bachelor party but we meant to do it in October to avoid hurricane season this time.

If you have time to reschedule, do Cabo. You'll have a blast.

Agree on the Cabo idea. Chicago and NYC are great for weekend trips but 7 nights is WAY to long to spend in either city.

You made a huge investment on what you thought was going to be an amazing, resort-style getaway. Don't sell yourself short just because you got fisted by Dean. You obviously have a degree of financial security or wouldn't be taking a trip like this in the first place. Bite the bullet on the fees and re-schedule in Cabo or another place you know you'll be thrilled about.

I hope it doesn't ruin my fishing plans. We have a charter to do some bay fishing for reds and trouts on Friday & Saturday. I called the guide earlier today and he said that the weather should be fine. Hope so. Aransas Pass.

Just got back from Puerta Aventuras on Sat. night the 18th. Friday was still ice cream conditions. No crowd getting out of the airport on Sat. As of Friday evening, the locals had still not heard there was a hurricane projected to hit the Yucatan on Monday night.

One of my clients is the company that runs the airports in Cancun, Merida, etc. and he said that Cancun was fine... the eye passed 90 miles south. Can't speak for Playa, though.

^^^^^
same here, heading to playa. been a long few days watching this stuff. glad there were no injuries. hope the resorts are back to normal asap.
