Ironic ...

So I'm listening online to Country Legends out of Houston, and they're playing "The South's Gonna Do It Again," the CDB.

On this day in history, the War of Northern Aggression (called the War Between the States by some and the Civil War by others) started.

I just found it kind of ironic!

In my senior political science seminar in college, we read an interesting book by Peter Applebome called "Dixie Rising:"

Dixie Rising: How the South is Shaping American Values, Politics & Culture

It's a very thoughtful, reflective, and well-researched work on the transformation of the South from the Civil Rights era through the book's printing (1996, I believe).

One of the book's interesting observations was how "secession" was no longer necessary. At the time, the President (Arkansas), Vice-President (Tennessee), Senate Majority Leader (Mississippi), and Speaker of the House (Georgia) were all Southerners.

Don't know about the south rising again, but I wouldn't mind living in the Republic of Texas!
