Iron Chef

I've driven by the new Iron Chefs restaurant (I think it is in the area at Burnet and 183)--is it a Benihanas sort of place or some other gimmick? I have to admit it made me laugh when I saw the sign. I'm sure the top chefs of the world will be decending in the Iron Chefs of Austin to ply their craft.

For those who do not know, "Iron Chef" is a Japanese-produced (Fuji TV) show pitting the "Iron Chefs", master chefs in various culinary styles, against challengers. It can be seen on the Food Network.

Has anyone eaten at Roy's Austin?

I've only eaten at Roy's twice but echo P/C's comments. My wife wasn't as big a fan as I was, though. I think she tried a fish that was new to her (I can't recall what it was) and didn't really like it--that probably shouldn't be blamed on Roy's, though. They had some interesting choices/tastes--definitely worth trying.

P/C, I'll nominate you to try you the Iron Chef restaurant and let us know about knife fights and any dismemberment. Please report back promptly.

I've been to Roy's a couple of times and have enjoyed it both times. Try the chocolate souffle dessert. Also, if you have kids, the staff was great with my three year old.

imagine walking into that restaurant and seeing Chef Chen firing up the wok...

I read that Iron Chef is "not affiliated" with the TV show and is going to be "upscale" chinese with a french influence. It may be open by now but if not it should be within a week or so.

Roys
the food is really good, but the Hawian atmosphere with all of the "Aloha, welcome to Roy's" kind of kills me.

Its open now, I did not eat there or even look at a menu, but it is open for dinner at least. I may check it out this weekend.

A couple of co workers of mine went for lunch today, and said it was excellent. Compared it with Suzi's, but better. So its definitely worth a try.

Oh, sorry FB I forgot that you hate everything that is rated as good in the chronicle. Seriously though, whats up with you hating pretty much every place to eat in ATX? I lived in H-Town for awhile and didn't think much of the places to eat there. Guess its just a matter of where you grew up and where you are.

the ******* dining scene in this town is atrocious. there are hardly any more than 3 GOOD restaurants and everything else is average to just plain ******. suzi's sucks the duck butter off my *******, it's that bad. i've eaten there about 15 times too, and i have no idea why i kept going back. of course, i'll never go there again on my own dime. houston, OTOH is a mecca of amazing dining options. no five star restaurants as in nyc or philly, but the amount of restaurants that serve good to awesome food makes me hard.

p.s., anything, and i mean ANYTHING the chronicle or citysearch for that matter rates as good is usually really ******.

i agree.. fine dining in austin is sucky as hell.. its not much better in houston but its still better than austin. The best places to eat in the US are San Fran and NYC.. after you eat at the top places there you'll think the food in Houston and Austin is very average.

It's just freaking food. I've never understood how people can get so passionate over something so simple. To hear FB talk, Austinites are forced to eat donkey dung dipped in rat piss. It tastes good enough to get down and fill a hole, and it all just turns into **** anyway.

Well I finally got a chance to eat here, and it was worth the wait! I dont know how FB would rate it, but its def better than anything I have had in Austin so far. I had the General Tso's Chicken and it was delicious. Highly recommend it to anyone in the area wanting some good Chinese!
