Several Iranian military vessels approached and fired unguided rockets near a U.S. aircraft carrier traveling through international waters, two U.S. officials confirmed to The Hill.

The Iranian vessels came as close at 1,500 yards from the USS Harry S. Truman before firing the rockets in a direction away from the carrier, one U.S. military official told The Hill.

1,500 yards while transiting the SoH. I made the 2004-2005 OIF deployment on the Truman.

At least they were smart enough to fire the rockets in a direction away from the carrier. I know, not a joking matter but what was Iran thinking they'd accomplish with that show of force. Provoke an International incident? Intimidate the US military? Fortunately the cooler heads of the US prevailed.

The Iranian Navy, from my experience, is very professional and comprised of real officers and sailors. While I don't have any information other than these news reports, I'm assuming from the MO these boats were part of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy (IRIN).

Honestly, I have no idea what the response would have been. I'm wasn't a SWO or a JAG, but I can't imagine we'd fire warning shots and escalate in that situation. Approaching a warship in a strait transit is very provacative and there was no Notice to Mariners.

If they were swarming our ships with a dozen+ of these "boghammer" cigarette boats and they said they planned on firing off some rockets...yes, I'd fire some warning shots and have our Hornets buzz them. But that doesn't seem to be what was going on. Just some douchebags reving his engine at the stoplight.

I'm not worried about unguided rockets from these little leaking tin cans. I'd be worried about all those coastal defense cruise missiles (hundreds), their boghammers, and their submarines. Their whole defense strategy is singularly designed around sinking an American carrier, preferably in the SoH. If we had indications that they've moved those missles or that those boghammers and submarines have scrambled out of their berths...and then you see several ships approaching during a Strait transit, yeah you'd be more proactive.
