40% of its value against the dollar in just the last week. On CNN they said the rial is currently in such a state of free fall that Iranian institutions are afraid to try to quote it and are watching this death spiral in fear of utter chaos.

How ironic is it that they're rushing to get "The Great Satan's" U.S. dollars?

This is one Middle Eastern crisis that can't result in a worse outcome for the U.S. than the regime that's already in place.

This may play well for Israel and/or Obama in the short term? Let them take themselves out?

Hopefully, it's still true they are not terribly close to a nuclear weapon.

Alas governing poorly, but willing to do whatever it takes to hang onto power can be an effective way to retain control. It wouldn't be good for the Iranian people, but an attack or outsiders on the Iranian regime may actually strengthen it's grip on power.

Holding power in a true democracy and doing what they are doing in Iran are vastly different enteprises. Intimidation and massive election manipulation are not part of the plan here.

I found this fascinating: a pictorial of Iranian women who can go to jail for singing to men. Per the article, Iran has grown more repressive throughout the phototographer's lifetime; "the morality police moving to control more of women’s lives (women cannot go skiing without a male guardian as of last year or study English literature or business as of last month). Ironically all this has occurred at same time that women attend universities at unprecedented rates, outnumbering men at institutions of higher learning in Iran."

This is a recipe for disaster for Iranian men and for the clerics. It may not happen this week but the current regime is doomed. My prediction is that, within a decade or two, you're going to see the Middle East remade as women (whom I believe are the key to a peaceful solution) see the strides that women in other countries are making.

The genie is out of the bottle. I believe Obama's patient approach is paying off.
