how easy is it to replace the battery on an ipod? I know I can send it in to apple and they can do it for $100, but I would rather not spend that much. anyone done this procedure?
All Lithium Polymer/Ion battery chemistries degrade over time, no matter what player you use. It's just that the IPod is the first non-laptop consumer device that most people have run into that uses LiPo/LIon battery chemisty so a lot of players were subjected to hellish conditions, well for batteries at least. At least IPods are widespread enough to ensure a steady supply of replacements.
I own an mp3 player with an extremely similar battery.
when it dies, i will push the button to open it, take it out, and then put a new one in...the way it should be. I'm aware of the lifespan of these kinds of batteries...I'm not aware, however, of the reasoning behind Apple's non removable battery (other then to rip people off.)
It's easily removable with a flathead screwdriver if you're even somewhat mechanically inclined. A replacement battery can be found for $30. Creative Lab's Zen Touch is the same way.
Or you can pay Apple a whopping $60 bucks to do it for you either by mail or at an Apple store. Either way, no big deal.
