IPOD battery crapped out

After about 6 months with the mini, the battery life has been reduced to about 2 hours. It only recently started happening, after i upgraded the software, i went from about 5-6 hours on continuous play to less than 2 on continuous play. Apple is asking me to send it back to replace the battery, but they are gonna wipe all my songs, which pisses me off. Any suggestions on how to save my songs, which are not backed up on my computer because my itunes started deteting the files after about a month of non-use.

Once you download the songs to your computer, can't you save them somewhere where iTunes can't get to them? Like on a CD or something?

I've never used an iPod before, but it would make sense.

It is a firewire HD, right? Shouldn't there be an icon on the desktop (Mac) to drag everything back to the HD? Or, in the start menu or whatever on a pc?

well, the files are GONE from the hard drive for some reason and I'm running Itunes on a PC Windows 2000. I found a file to rip music files from the Ipod and onto the HD.
