Ipod as External Storage Device

I have a 40 gig ipod and I'm about to get a new computer. My question is this: Can I use the Ipod to store all my music (not from syncing with Itunes, but actually dragging and dropping in windows explorer), and then, when I install Itunes on the new computer, just transfer all the music files to my new computer? I'm kinda anal about losing any music files because I don't want to go thru the tedious process of ripping all my cds again. I've backed them up on dvd already.

are you using mac or pc?

on mac, it should show up in the finder as removable media...just drag and drop. not sure for PC but you should be able to.

got a pc. pretty sure I just have to activate it as a storage device. Then drag and drop. We'll see how it works.
