iPhone

I am thinking of getting an iPhone. I have heard the email function isn't great though. Do any of you all have experience with iPhones? What are its strengths and weaknesses? How does it compare to other phones on the market?

You might want to wait a few weeks as there is some pretty strong evidence of a 3G version coming out (faster data network), possibly around June. May be a new form factor design on this release too.

I like my iPhone a lot, and I have had Treos and Blackberries. Email is fine on the iPhone but you currently cannot delete more than one message at a time. This is not much of an issue for me as I forward my personal email address (I have my own domain) through a Gmail IMAP account to use their spam filtering, and I typically manage the account online rather than through the phone.

There are so many nice little design touches on the iPhone that really separate it from other devices out there, not just the look of it but the way all the pieces work so smoothly together. Current weaknesses are the Edge network, which can be pretty slow in places but will be addressed with the 3G model, and lack of Exchange integration for corporate users, which will be addressed in the 2.0 firmware release in late June.

The iPhone is just going to get better. Wait for the 3G model and get it.

In my opinion It's great as a multimedia device with the ipod and internet browsing (what I use mine the most). Other than the lack of flash support, I really enjoy browsing the web on my iphone and that works great everywhere.

It's mediocre/average as a phone. Took forever to get text messaging to multiple recipients. Still no picture messaging. Seems like really common everyday cell phone features that should be included in a $400 device from the beginning.

With that said I am a fan and will most likely upgrade to the 3G version when that comes out.

I love my iPhone. I use it for browsing and text and music sometimes. The interface is just awesome, i find out little tricks every now and then.

The only thing i dont like is the picture messaging. It is the WORST out of any phone on the market. seriously.

things i wish it had are flash in the browser and the ability to save pictures off hte internet. Other than that its awesome, buy it.

i have it and like it, but if you are a power email user you will want to break it in half.

Bbery>>>iPhone for Powermailers.

ex: you cannot search for old emails and it only keeps your last 50 or so emails onboard, so finding that email from a colleague from 3 weeks ago is effectively impossible.

If you just need to read / respond to emails in serial fashion, the iphone is great. i am actually a faster typist on my iphone than i ever was on my bbery.

for what i do, i can get by with the limited email capability, but i do all my powermailing from a desktop. if you are a a real "blackberry guy" iphone is useless to you.

Apple has announced integration of MS exchange which will probably change a lot of those gripes, but to what degree is unknown.

for your general emailing it is very handy and useful and better than bbery - all your moms cute HTML emails and pictures come in just like on the desktop.

as an overall device, i cannot think of a better phone. understand that it excels in some areas and lags in others though.

oh, and regarding the gripes about text messaging above--

iphone is the only phone i know of that keeps text messages grouped by convesation. in other words, it is like IM--multiple "conversations" with different people instead of one "inbox" and "sent" window with all the people mixed together. this is a great feature.

one more thing, the VM feature (random access, no dial in or password BS) is worth the price all by itself. its seriously my favorite part of the whole thing.

The Mobile Safari browser is far and away the best web browser on a handheld device, and the way you can pinch to zoom in, or double-tap on a page section to zoom just that area, then double-tap again to zoom back out -- brilliant design and implementation of the idea.

Another thing to consider over the long term is development of the software ecosystem and the tools that are likely to show up soon through Apple's AppStore. There has been a strong response to the SDK release which would suggest some interesting things coming our way soon through third party developers.

What's the attraction of GPS?

I've seen this on Blackberry Curves as well. GPS or WiFi, but not both. Why would someone want GPS?

Thanks

I wonder what the battery life on these 3G phones is going to be. If the battery life is as good as the EDGE phones, I'll prob dump my 8GB on ebay and grab a new 16GB 3G phone.

another thing that bugs me about the iphone is it doesnt work in any of the iPod speaker docks i've tried. Do they make specific ones that work with the phone?

best mobile phone I have ever owned, and I have owned alot...it is also nice that on the plane out of town tomorrow night I can pull out my phone and watch Lonesome Dove to pass the time....

There was a news release earlier this week that AT&T will run a promotion this summer where they will subsidize $200 of the iphone purchase price. Not clear if this is the 3G version or just clearing out the old edge stock. FYI.

First off, there was a rumor about the $199 phone, and a pretty unsubstantiated one too.

Windows Mobile 6.1 has threaded text messaging also btw. The HTC Touch and Titan have Rev A (4g basically) and GPS already and you can install whatever you want on it without having to jailbreak it. You have to put up with Windows but hopefully soon you'll be able to install Android over it this year.

iPhone isn't really that unique and is fairly limited in it's speed and capability. BUT, it's user friendly and pretty so it appeals to a lot of people.

June though should see a 3G version come out so if you want an iPhone, you might want to wait.
