iPhone - sharing music library

Forgive if this has been covered. I have been searching for the right answer and can't seem to find it.

I recently purchased an iPhone. I don't keep an iTunes library, Capnamerca does. I have been told that we should be able to share content. We have authorized each others computers for our iTunes accounts. When I connect my new iPhone to his iTunes account it asks if I want to override the existing library and add his.

Does this ONLY effect the music? Or am I going to be syncing to his calender and contacts and everything else?

Thanks in advance

I assume that when you say he "keeps an iTunes library", you mean that you have no music of your own on your computer.

When you get that prompt, cancel out of it for the moment.

Select your phone under the Devices section on the left, and go to the Info tab. Make sure all of the options to sync calendars, contacts, etc. are unchecked.

Under the Music tab, select Sync Music. If he has more than will fit on your phone, I recommend specifying what to transfer by playlist. I now have an entire set of phone-specific playlists to make it easier to downselect on my library.

Save all the settings and then click "Sync" at the lower right.

Why the ******** at Apple don't allow manual syncing of music to multiple computers is beyond me, and it has pissed me off ever since I bought the thing.

Rant aside, hope that helps.

If you have purchases on the phone from your account, they should still sync back to the PC, especially if it's authorized for you.

I'll check this thread in the morning in the hopes that you're not cursing my name.

I wimped out at the last minute. I connected the phone to his computer and it actually says "your phone will be erased and replaced by his library" or something close to that. It's doesn't say my "library" will be erased but the whole phone. think I'm going to call iPhone help.

I'll let you know. thanks for your help

It will replace the existing music library (other than purchases). Based on your first post I assumed you were only concerned about the other data.

Good luck with the phone support. Hopefully they'll be able to sort it out.

One word - IDump. Just used this software last weekend and it worked great. You can take the Ipod and dump all the music/video/whatever contents into your Itunes on your computer. Worked great. You can download the software and you have a free 3 day trial. Not sure what the cost of it is as I only needed it the one time (bought a used Ipod and wanted to save all the content). Hope this helps.
