iphone ipickle

So, my contract with Sprint ended in Jan of 08 and, anticipating the launch of the iphone 3G, I switched over to AT&T. Got their free POS Razr to use in the meantime.

3G rolls out - cheaper phone, more expensive service plan. Pretty much a wash, so no big deal. I go to upgrade and, f me in the goat ***, I'm not eligible. Not a new customer, not eligible for equipment upgrade for another year due to the crap Razr. Phone (unsubsidized) will cost $400 in addition to the new jacked up service plan.

Anybody else in this situation? Found a resolution? As a full-on Apple wonk, I'm gonna make it happen somehow. Just can't bring myself to pay AT&T the increased plan on top of a non-discounted iphone.

(AT&T folks aren't budging a bit on this one. Apple, predictably, has their hands tied tight)

follow me on this one... i went to get the iphone and was told not eligible for upgrade pricing. my contract with att was over (2 yrs expired) and i had never used an upgrade, always bought my phones myself. i'm livid, call and talk to many people who kept telling me i bought a phone in jan of 07. which sucked b/c i bought that phone in april of 06. after serious talk with a couple people higher on the ladder they saw the mistakes (about 4 of them) and fixed it.

have you moved at all since? as in changed area codes? i would call and tell them the people at the store when you signed up said you would be fine (even if they didn't). make a fuss. they will flip.

This was a large topic pre-release on the everythingiphone forum. Always read the small print.
If you would've bought the v1 iphone until 3g release, you would've been refunded the cost difference and qualified for upgrade pricing.

"Keep in mind that if Apple didn't relent and let AT&T subsidize the phone, you'd pay $400 for the second gen iPhone, just like the first gen, and you wouldn't feel ripped off. Hard to blame AT&T on this one."

Actually, AT%T more than makes up the difference with the new, more expensive, rate plan. The frustrating thing is that they'd make $35 more off me a month if they'd let me upgrade. The $200 hit they take on the phone would be made up in less than 6 months.

you should call att, say you're not happy with the service and you can't pick up a signal anywhere close to where you live. say you're going to leave and port your number. see how long you have to come back before the termination fee takes effect and see if you'd have to sign a new contract if you moved and weren't happy with the other service. port your number to verizon. they give you some time to cancel without charges. go back to att, sign a new contract, avoid cancel fees. a new contract gets eligibility.

that's the only way i could think of to get around this. i've read about using an old iphone and switching out sim cards, but it looks like you had to do that before the july 11th launch.

don't mean to sound harsh, but how many phone plans have you had in your life? this is pretty standard stuff. they only subsidize for new customers, or about once a year (or two) for existing customers. that is fairly standard practice.
