I am at a resort in Mexico with free wi-fi. will dl'ing musing, getting on the intertubes cost me extra, if i am going through the wi-fi?

My guess is no, because I do have the data roaming turned off.

Also, even though data roaming is off, i am receiving some txts. do i only get hammered with some fee if i open them or what?

unless you got an international package AT&T is going to hit you with int'l roaming on those text messages. Data if you are on the wifi you should have no issues about the fees.

I would just remove the SIM card and use the wi-fi. Without the SIM card, the "phone" features of the phone will not work. Or you can pony up for the 25 or 50mb package or whatever it is if you need to use the "phone" features. I think it is 25 or 50 bucks, something like that.

Wifi is free. I've used my iPhone all over the world with no data charges.

(Mexico, China, Canada, and Europe).

Make sure "international data roaming" is off. Then you can use your wifi all you want without a single charge.

Text messages can get expensive. When i was in China, my gf kept texting me (and incoming are free) but every now and then i would reply.... at 50 cents a piece, those ******* add up quick.

I repeat, text messages are only charged if you reply.

(Assuming you have AT&T with free incoming texts in the US)

Since you can't turn text messaging off, then you can't choose not to get them. For example, if you answer a call when you are out of the US, it will charge you as roaming, because you CHOSE to answer. But if you get a text, there was nothing you could do about it. Feel free to read them, they are already on your phone. But if you reply, its 50 cents each.
