Apple CEO Steve Jobs boasted over 1500 new application programming interfaces (APIs) for developers in iPhone 4.0, letting them access features like the iPhone’s calendar, photo library, video-camera data, and more. App creators can also take advantage of OS X features like Quick Look, in-app SMS, and more. Plus, there are over 2000 APIs for hardware-accelerated math functions.

iPhone 4.0 boasts more than 100 new user features, such as playlist creation, 5x digital zoom in the camera app, tap-to-focus for video, auto photo-geotagging, the addition of Places functionality, the ability to change the Home screen wallpaper, improved spell-checking, and support for Bluetooth keyboards.

Many of the features added are already available on the iPad, which currently runs iPhone OS 3.2.

Strangely, the thing I am probably most looking forward to is the folders. The multitasking, like SMS photos, is just an overdue feature, and the mail improvements are hard for me to conceptualize (I'm not sure why I'd want to merge my inboxes; thought switching between them would be nicer)... but I'm an organization freak, and I need folders... I'm a little irked that I can't name them myself, but I'm just happy to have them.

That said, the over 100 features is just developer counting, and that number includes bug fixes and multiple recounts for the same item which may appear in different places. All the same, it looks like a good update, but it is noteworthy that the original iPhone will not be getting the update. The platform is now old enough to have end of lifed a model... good for them!

good and some necessary changes. I've read that some of the more welcomed updates are only available on the 3GS version of the iPhone, so i guess I have to decide if multitasking is worth buying a new phone (doubt it).

i am excited about the unified inbox
i hate having to switch between accounts to check all my email

Keep in mind, dalhorn, even on the 3GS it isn't "true" multitasking, in that you won't be able to choose which apps run concurrently. They are allowing certain types of apps to use the multitasking which was already available in the phone for native apps since the original iPhone. Which is to say, you'll be able to "multitask" with apps like Pandora, but not an IM client or (obviously) run apps within the browsers.

As for buying a new phone, I'd be hanging back on that right now, even if you know you are sticking with iPhone. A new iPhone has been released every year up until now, and it is possible that they are waiting until the last possible date to file their FCC paperwork before they announce the new unit this year (allowing some separation between the new iPhone and the iPad). If we haven't heard anything by the end of May, then you should make the decision if you will upgrade. That said, having had both the original unit AND the 3GS, I think it is worth the upgrade even if it means resigning with AT&T.

dxspaz, what do you use your different accounts for? I just have work, personal and SPAM emails, and I sure as hell don't want to mix those into one inbox. I use them for different things so I like to have them separate, I'm not sure why I'd want to mix them, and how that would benefit me.

I heard it is only available for 3GS versions. That being said, haven't any of you ever heard of the term "Jailbreak". Blackra1n will let you do all of this and download 3rd party apps from places other than itunes Police State.

Funny. I've been multitasking, using folders, voip, custom backgrounds/sounds, etc, with an iphone 3G for over a year. I seriously doubt there is a technical reason why a 3GS is required for 4.0.

mia,

i have 3 email accts that i use for various reasons. i'm just lazy and hate having to back out of the inbox to select accounts. i'm also assuming that a unifies inbox will have some indication as to which acct the message is addressed to like in the mac mail program. you can still see each box separately if you want though.

I'm just having a hard time conceptualizing it. I'm sure it is good and I'll definitely give it a try.

I'd be happy if they would just fix some of the things that make me wish I still had my Blackberry. I need an "attach" button in email, a battery that lasts half the day, the ability to delete just one call, browser history item, etc.

IIRC, both the 3G and 3GS will be able to run 4.0, and the original iPhone is too underpowered to run multitasking. The challenge is not actually doing multitasking. It's doing it in a way that minimizes battery drain while providing the necessary features. Sounds like they've done that. We'll see.

Multitasking? Heh I thought that was beneath Apple....

Oh and have fun with iAD... That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If I owned an iPhone I would be furious.

I doubt that Apple will come out with the 4g phone before next year. Apple hasn't even come close to getting a deal with verizon inked out yet and there is no way they would have produced a CDMA version based on a probability. What I am thinking is that they have done some preliminary work on a CDMA phone and when they do finally get the deal worked out they will start production and release the new version sometime next year.

Can it place and receive telephone calls?
