iPad Saving a DVD onto your computer

Ok, just popped over to apple.com to check out this new thing, and I think I like it. I've been wanting a second computer for awhile so that I can access the net while the fiance is hogging the computer, and this looks to fit the bill, and it starts at only $500.
But
, I have a question that directly relates to the potential functionality of said device:

Is there anything in particular I have to buy or any particular hoops I need to do in order to save a DVD I currently own to a computer? And secondly, how much storage does a DVD take up per hour?

The iPad has a 16GB flash drive at its lowest price point, it has no drives whatsoever, and my intention would be save a DVD to my laptop, and then transfer it to the iPad. Am I out of my mind for considering this? Or would it be QED?

from reading the other thread on cactus, it seems the best you could do is transfer it to an SD card.... since they don't have a USB port.

i just loaded a bunch of movies on my ps3 and the average DVD was bout 1 gig, and HD (using divx) was anywhere from 3 to 6 gigs.

Ok, so I would need this Divx that you speak of. Pretty straightforward to find, install, and use?

I did read that it has bluetooth, so it could be beamed to the internal flash drive, no? But I do rather like this notion of keeping info on the SD and not feeling like I need to get the big boy flash drive.

to be honest..... i don't know a whole lot about macs. a quick search said they do offer a mac player. i am sure there are other options, .MKV is another popular file format for PC. you might need to do some research.

EDIT: You should be able to just rip the DVD to your PC, then when you sync the iPad you can select which movies/TV shows you want or don't just like an iPhone.

As for ripping the DVD to iTunes, a quick google search turned up this:The Link

I rip movies off DVDs (standard def) via a free program called Handbrake. Learned about it via this forum. Copy the ripped movie to my iTunes, then load it up to my iPhone. Takes up ~ 1 gig.
