About an hour ago, I played electric guitar for the 1st time in just under 3 years. It hasn't been all bad -- I didn't have a studio, but did have a new baby, and was worried that he'd swallow a pick, so I forced myself to learn to fingerpick acoustic guitar until I felt I could trust him.

I dragged some amps up from the garage (a Marshall combo and a little Peavey combo) and plugged in a new Gibson SG I bought a couple of months back (yeah, I went that long without plugging it in), and let's just say that daddy is happy.

Metasonix is this crazy *** company that uses non-instrument vacuum tubes to make their components and therefore gets crazy sounds out of their gear. The also name their gear things like "scrotum smasher" and "butt probe" etc. From everything I have heard people either swear by their gear or hate it, but it is pretty much THE definition of boutique equipment. Now, I personally wouldn't drop 5K on a guitar head, but thats just me.

You know, what's funny is that after you don't play electric for a long time, your perception of tone totally changes. I'm writing a soundtrack to a little corporate video, and I needed a guitar riff to balance a keyboard part. I grabbed this SG and my little Peavey "sort of a Vox AC30" amp, and kept things quiet, and it sounds like Lou Reed's "New York" album! I never would have found that tone center if I had been focusing on a cranked Marshall -- it's just not there.
