Installing Windows XP Pro

So I have a laptop with XP Home Edition on it. For school, I have to have XP Professional. I bought the software (for $7 at the University software store...helluva deal), and now need to install it.

Is it advisable to just pop it in and install it over my current OS? If I do that, will I lose some files that I really don't want to (digital photos, papers, mp3s, etc.)? If anyone can tell me whether I should expect adverse effects and suggest another plan, or if just installing the new software is ok, that would be great.

If you do not have too many files, i would burn a CD or two and do a clean install, meaning having Windows erase everything and then install professional. You will have to reinstall all of your other software (MS Office, etc), but its well worth it to avioid the problems.
