Best sushi and Best movie theatre? Is there anything like the Drafthouse in Austin?

TIA.

for the best theater you have to go right outside the loop: edwards marq*e. it gets a nod from me over greenway palace because you don't have to pay for parking.

the drafthouse is way outside the loop. if you want to drink while you watch your movie hit up the river oaks theater.

i hated the atmosphere, but RA had some damn tasty sushi. just know that it's the "trendiest of trendy" places to go. I ordered a "Lone Star" and since they don't carry the beer, apparently (treason!) they brought me their "lone star sushi plate"

Movie theaters: best multiplex: edwards greenway plaza
best art house: river oaks theater or angelika film center
drafthouse: like mentioned above, it's way out on highway 6. you take the westpark toll road, then turn north on 6.

My fave sushi is Osaka on Westheimer, inside of Montrose.

Nothing to add re: theaters, but to second the above reqs.

I really didn't like Ra's sushi the one time I went and will attest to it's trendy-ness. I won't go there again. My favorite is Nippon on Montrose just under 59. My second choice is probably Rickshaw's over near the Chuy's.

I wouldn't go to Marq*E; it's either ghetto or overrun with kids depending on the night. Paying for parking is one of my pet peeves but it's worth it at Edwards because you don't have to put up with the above.

I wouldn't go to the Drafthouse here in Houston because the setup for watching a movie isn't very good. I generally go to the Marq*E but it is definitely overrun by 15 - 18 year olds and ******** that don't turn off their cell phones. So far the Angelica is the only theatre I've found where people are semi-considerate of the others watching the movie.

Good to hear the river oaks theater serves alcohol. I'm going to have to take advantage of this when a good midnight movie comes along. I still kick myself for not going a couple of years ago when they showed Dazed and Confused and the Big Lebowski on consecutive weeks.

another sushi place my "trendy" friends like is Fish at Grey & Bagby. i've never been.

the river oaks theatre weekend shows have been great lately. Spinal Tap 2 weeks ago, Rocky Horror last week, and Pulp Fiction this weekend.

Been to Fish once and thought the sushi was excellent. It was a Monday night with a nice peaceful atmosphere. But I've heard it becomes club-ish on the weekend.

I caught part of a news story the other day, something about River Oaks Theater getting pushed out. Any truth to that?

Weingarten is about to tear down the NW corner of the RO shopping center. The businesses are out and the fence is up. A Borders, parking garage, and **** is going in. Weingarten is quoted extensively in the Chron a week or two ago that no other sections of the shopping center, i.e. no other of the white buildings on either side of Gray, will be touched. This means the theatre. I sure hope that's the case.

As much as I despise leaving the inner loop, Alamo Drafthouse takes only a few minutes drive on the Westpark Tollway. Exit at Highway 6 and you're only a block away. I'm not a big movie goer, but I'll go a little out of my way to get table service during the show. If you live close to 59, it's pretty convenient.

Ten years ago, I used to eat at Cafe Jappon on Kirby so often that the waitresses could recite my order befroe I could. I always like Nippon the Village, but it's closed now.

Now I spread it around. None of them really sticks out. If you want something lively, RA or Fish are perfect. If you want to have a few pieces on a quiet Sunday afternoon with the New Times, Osaka on Westheimer is fine. Back Door Sushi is a nice place to talk to a chick, plus you can walk to Marfreless when you done.

sushi places i like: rickshaw, blue fish house, osaka, azuma, kubo, fish, and only for quick in and out, back door

sushi places that i do not like: miyako, sake lounge, todai, oishii, ginza

went to the angelika and edwards greenway last weekend. both were fine.

I agree with huge's list except I would switch Oishii (which I like) and Back Door (great name, mediocre sushi). For theaters, I would go with Angelika, Edwards on Weslayen, or River Oaks.

The one across the street from Cafe Express on Kirby is Sushi King. Pretty good sushi.

Fish in Midtown is good stuff & good crowd. Miyako outside the loop on Westheimer is still my favorite. Oishii is good & close to the office.

We need more theaters inner beltway that serve beer dammit.

Sushi King on Kirby was probably the worst sushi i've ever had. i don' tknow if i jus thad a bad experience b/c i only went once and won't be going again.... but it was bland and soft.

it's been in business for awhile so i won't say it's categorically bad, but i didn't like it and either did the gf

Holy Crap.. Marfreless is around still? Is it still in the same place (off of Gray?), no sign outside... soft, comfortable couches and dark inside?.. ah the good times there in law school back.. gulp.. in the early 80s!!!!!

Marfreless is still going strong. It was bought several years back by the same Texas Ex (and partners) who owns El Arroyo. They tried to spiff the place up by replacing all the old comfy couches with a dozen or so identical fake leather ones. The place lost some of its charm in the process. Still a great place to take a date though.
