ING Direct Orange Savings Accounts

Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) wth ING Direct...?

I've seen a few complaints posted to the internet, but there was nothing in them to cause me alarm. One guy got all exercised because their $25 weekly withdrawal caused him to bounce some checks. I usually have more then $25 in my account, so this shouldn't be an issue.

Any first hand horror stories or things to look out for...?

I've used them for several years with no problems. Easy to set-up and easy to transfer money between linked accounts.

the guy complaining about auto withdrawal is a complete idiot (and seriously lacks the concept of 'personal responsibility'). the $25 weekly withdrawl is not something ING does unilaterally. a user has to set it up -- ING direct just provides the tools to encourage automatic savings.

i have been with ING direct since january 2003. love being a customer.

they used to be a little more competitive with the rates, but I have nothing but good things to say. Etrade bank gives me better rates but ING was faster with transfers

I've used them for many years and I love it still. Easy to use. I have a couple of CD's, savings and checkings... I transfer from my wells Fargo automatically every month, and use ing checkings to pay all automated bills through it...

also check out hsbc. better rate and they give you an atm card for withdrawals. especially helpful if you use the account as an emergency account like me...

I'm also looking into an online savings account. From what I've read, ING has the best service and the fewest ******** fees. I'd gladly take that in exchange for 0.1% less interest.

Report back if you open an account.

I have an ING account and love it. Very easy to use.

The only complaint I have is I wish the deposits/withdrawals were faster. For example, I transferred ~$1000 last week from my checking to my ING account via the ING website (and I have my brick & mortar checking account tied to it). I did this like Wed. last week and it is Monday this week and the money has yet to get transferred from my bank. I wish it was faster. I bet it happens tomorrow but still wish it was faster.

But other than that, I love ING and continue to use them. I like the ability to set up sub-accounts within ING fairly easy. For example, I did not do an escrow for property taxes and every month I transfer $XXX to my ING sub account just for taxes to pay out in December. I am doing the same thing for IRS b/c I keep owing money (not sure how long before IRS makes me do quarterly payments).

I also have set up ladder CDs for savings purposes and ING does it easily as well.

I have been with Emigrant Direct for a while now (3 years?) and while the rates are a bit low right now the transfers are next day. I opened up a citibank account because the rate was better and they take 3-5 days to transfer anything.

I currently have Emigrant and love it. Thinking about switching hereThe Link

because of their great rates. ING has a $25 referral perk. But methinks that's why they tend to have rates lower than some.

Why go with ING at 3.00% when HSBC is offering 3.5%??

Historically, HSBC tries to best everyone. IE... when emigrant was @ 5.00% not too long ago, HSBC was at 5.05%.

I have HSBC but it is just our 3 months of emergency money so we don't care about quick transfers. Transfers take 2 days for us but the rate is higher and that's all we care about. I have been happy that I opened this account 3 years ago but it is hard to see the rate go from over 5 to where it is now.

yeah, let us know of any hidden fees with hsbc; think I'll just open an account with both and transfer the bulk of my cash around to whoever has the highest current interest rate..

WIth HSBC, I have never had any fees with my account and I have had them for about 3 or 4 years.

I've never checked the rules but my situation has always been that I had at least $5k in there and we only do transfers once or twice a month. I am not sure if there is a max # of transfers or a minimum amount. I think the catch is that you have to wait 2 days for the transfer to go through as opposed to some others I have heard take one day.

I am a picky anal SOB and it has been great. 3 Usernames to login is only annoying part (good for security) but I actually set it up on my BofA online account where it lets me look at all of my online accounts via BofA website.

i have both HSBC and ING Direct.

ING has faster transactions (1-2 business days with money going in or out), MUCH MUCH better customer service, but lower rates (about 50 basis points lower on avg).

HSBC has higher rates, but it takes 3-5 business days to make a transfer, their customer service on the phone is antiquated and slow, and what i think is stupid is if you have an HSBC acct in the states you can't go to an HSBC branch in asia or europe and withdraw money from your HSBC acct there.

the biggest problem i have with HSBC is their transfer time. if i wire money into my hsbc acct, they'll take the money from my bofa account withing 1 business day, but it won't show up in my hsbc acct for another 2-4 days. it is ridiculous. they're just earning interest on your money for a few days (which in effect is a transfer fee).

but i still have a huge chunk of money in hsbc which i think is fine since i don't need it to be extremely liquid, and i have a smaller amount of money in ING earning a lower interest rate but at the same time i can get to it extremely fast.

How does the ATM card work? I don't see any HSBC ATM's in Texas. Can you just use it like a debit card, only you have x amount of transactions a month?

Apparently HSBC is only in:

Connecticut
DC Area
Delaware
New Jersey
New York

I don't care about those areas, but I would get a card just to use the ATM abroad. Too bad the ATM card doesn't work in other countries.

Quick question. I too have an account with ING direct and thinking about opening another account with them or with HSBC since I am earning squat on my Scottrade account.

My understanding is that I can have a personal and joint account under ING and they both would be federally insured up to $100k. If my understanding is not correct, than I need to open one with HSBC.
