Indy and Champ/CART back together?

I was going to post this yesterday but didn't think anyone would really care.

I'm an IRL fan solely because I started going to the 500 nine years ago and haven't missed a year since. It has made me a fan of the series so I'm hopeful that this has all the positive effects that people have been wanting for years. I am hoping, but doubt, that there will be a unified race in Long Beach this year because I would love to see the IRL guys (and girl) just up the road from me.

I tried to watch Daytona on Sunday but it just doesn't interest me. It was nice to see Hornish hold his own though, and I'll probably keep track of he and Dario this year. Maybe had I been going to Daytona for 10 years my view would be different.

I always prefered the Champ Car circuit because they ran on circuits instead of ovals.

I never made it to the "Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach", but I'm staring at a ticket from the 29th Annual one April 11-13, 2003.

However I did make it to Laguna Seca one year. (I still have the ear plugs.)

Even NASCAR has street racing. Why did the IRL have to go "all oval, all the time"?

If they have a merged 2008 season (which looks likely) I haven't seen Houston on the short-list of CCWS races to make the cut. I'm guessing it will just get canceled.

I gave up on both a couple of years ago. I'd be glad if they got back together, but they already lost Bourdais, Hornish and Franchitti. My only hope is they keep the DP01 for road and street racing. I'd really like to see the development of that chassis.

i'm sure it was, but i wasn't there. i've only recently begun to enjoy the sport. for a new fan these developments are encouraging.

I'm glad the Wind Tunnel discussion had a few guys mention that CART in the 90s is the best formula for this thing on track. They also got Tony George to say Yes on that issue as well, lol. If it aint broke don't fix it.

Looks like Walker and Forsythe are gone. So no many Champ Car teams coming over. Not gonna see the high 20 something car count everyone was hoping for.

Probably 24-26 cars at Homestead, which would be pretty encouraging. It will be interesting to see how the teams do tomorrow and Thursday in the testing.

Hopefully this will lead to a more exciting May, the likes of which have not been around since before I paid any attention. Having 35-40 cars qualifying would be a great indicator.

And after his Sprint Cup debut, Dario Franchitti will likely not be racing on Memorial Day weekend if he doesn't hop in a sled for Chip Ganassi at Indy. That would be a story to follow.

While the unification and more even schedule will help, there will be a glass ceiling as long as they keep putting crappy spec cars out there.

There are 22 car/driver combos that are 100% confirmed and another 4 that are 95% confirmed (confirmed, awaiting announcement) and then a handful of other part timers.

This according to tracksideonline.

So the first race under a unified series came and went with no major surprises.

Dixon winning, Danica complaining of understeer, and a lot more moving chicanes.

I am really interested to see how the Champ drivers compete on the road/street courses, beginning this week in St. Pete.

I was happy to see that not too many of them pushed it so hard as to wreck their only car....except the two who rolled up a couple front runners in their incidents.

All in all, about what was expected.

In practice today the CCWS teams posted 3 of the top 6 and 4 of the top 10 times. Not bad. Will be watching qualifying tomorrow to see if they keep it up.

The best thing that could happen for the new series is to have one or more of those guys compete and even win.

Will Power turns the quickest lap of the day but Kanaan clips him in the "Fast 6" format.

W. Power to start outside 1
J. Wilson to start inside 2
O. Servia to start inside 4
Rahal and Perera also starting in the top 10
