...my family decided to spend Xmas at my brother's "beachhouse" in Indianola.

anything I should not miss while here?

bbq?
sights?
stores?
the cemetery and LaSalle monument are really cool here. anything else nearby?

driving back to Clear Lake, so this applies for the trip back, too.

See if you can find this. . .

Remains of the first La Salle monument near the Indianola Cemetery

We did a drive by on a road trip this past summer. There really isn't anything there other than the monument. The closest town of any size is Port Lavaca. We didn't find much there either, but didn't really take the time to ask for suggestions. As for what's between Indianola and Clear Lake, nothing. Absolutely nothing. My advice is to do nothing and enjoy the hell out of it.

yeah, enjoying the hell out of doing nothing. already finished one book ('slow man' by coetzee). we're doing the drinking and shotgun shooting games right now.

my brother's property line runs along the old bed of the original railroad tracks. crazy to think this place was once one of the bigger ports in Texas before being wiped out.

Yep. Most of the first inhabitants of Central Texas came here via Indianola. Without the series of tragedies, who knows what it would be today. It would have had an impact on the growth of Galveston and Houston, and would likely encompass the entire peninsula between Port O'Connor, Port Lavaca, and Seadrift. There are a lot of ghost towns, but few were as big and had the promise and potential that Indianola had. It's freaky to think about it.

You could go to Port O'C and take the state ferry boat out to uninhabited Matagorda Island. Amazing, desolate beach.
