Indiana Player Walkout?

To summarize what I posted on another board:

If Gordon and White and the other starters are in the group, IU would have to destroy the program in order to save it.

But I think the players should take a second look at the guy they are backing.

Indiana needs to take another look at themselves. They new what they were getting when they hired Sampson. They need to stick with their decision at least until the end of the season. I don't like them firing him mid to late season. The recruiting violations are already done and known with so it is not like he is going to do great damage by finishing out the last month of the season.

I'd like to know why the folks at espn are acting like Sampson's violations aren't a big deal. All those extra calls were a huge recruiting advantage.

According to IU officials this never happened. Of course, I doubt they would actually admit it.

Greenspan pretty much "said without saying" that former president Herbert chose Sampson, while Greenspan wanted Kevin Stallings. Other than the KS issue, he hasn't done a bad job.

It's crazy, but these kids love Kelvin. I bet they probably said something along those lines and the AD talked to them about it and they realized how silly it was, but they're trying to show support for their coach that recruited them.

They probably believe him that he didn't know about the three way calls or whatever excuses he's making. That doesn't make these players terrible people.

you have to understand what a crappy situation it is for the players. This was their guy, their leader--and now he's being pushed out for something that probably doesn't seem like that big of a deal to them. So they're mad, they want to keep the coach. All Indiana has to do is sit them down and explain the entire situation to them and this will blow over, and they will finish their season. No national title, but a solid season in the end.

Do you guys really think players care about a coach violating phone call guidelines? Most players are very loyal to their coach.

What about loyalty to the school (paying for your scholarship), the remaining coaching staff and players who have put in a lot of hard work? The senior captain should be leading in a way that brings his team together, not destroying it.

First of all, the basketball HC is the unquestioned leader of the program. By "banding together," it might seem like they're forgetting about the guy who's been leading them.

Meanwhile, it was the school that hired a guy they knew was a cheater, and had to fire him because he was a cheater.

Who made the mistakes here? Not the players. But no, some of you want them to shake it off and show up like nothing's been happening.

I'm not on a ***** about any of the players except White. According to this story, the other 5 players who missed practice are going to follow his lead whether to refuse to play the next game.

If the guy was simply named the captain by Sampson, that might be one thing, but if he was elected by the rest of the team, shouldn't he think about his obligations to all the players? Screw the school, what about those 6 guys who are willing to bust *** and play who voted you captain? Go play basketball and have fun by pillorying school administration and the AD whenever someone puts a microphone in your face.

Edit:

Just saw this pop up. Apparently, most players showed up for the evening walkthrough and are expected to play Saturday.

This is everything that is wrong with college sports. Fortunately there is more good then bad I think. But you have a cheater coach hired while a known cheat and players that back said cheater. When we start rationalizing the degree of cheating we have already lost as a society. You are either honest and have integrity or you don't. A 2 time cheat should never be allowed to coach at any D1 program again. It's not like some booster paid a recruit and you can't really prove whether the coach knew about it. It was the stinking coach that did it. He had to go and go now.

I think too many were initially getting on the players. They tried to walk out to show their loyalty and see if could influence the decision of the administrators. Once Sampson accepted the buyout and the decision was made they are coming back. Now if they refused to play the next game or missed more practices and meetings then that would be something....but I don't think that happens.

Indiana gets the black eye here not the players who were just loyal to their coach.
