In Wall speaker suggestions

I'm looking for suggestions on good to great in wall speaker suggestions. They will be mostly for music and I'm trying to get excellent sound. Most of the one I've checked out in the stores don't sound all that great.

Is that a function of beng in-wall, or are there some good ones out there? I'm willing to spend up to $3-400 per.

It's pretty tough to get quality in-wall speakers. The "cabinet" volume just isn't there. Some are better than others, though. I heard some decent Speakercraft & Niles models yesterday at Music By Design near Lamar/Anderson in Austin.

Do they have to be IN-wall speakers, or could planar wall-mounts suffice? The same store has some cool electrostatics, although the smallest model may be too expenive, and bass response may not be so great. I think Martin-Logan makes some small electrostats, too.

martin-logans are the best sounding speaker i have ever heard. you are probably thinking about the script - they are wall mountable electrostatics. msrp is about $850 each, but they sell used on ebay for around $1100. they also make some in-wall speakers, but i believe they use cone drivers.

Go talk to the people at Ultimate Electronics, a buddy of mine used to work there, they had really cool in-wall speakers and hidden speakers, i'd definately check it out just to see what they can do.
