Assuming the expected occurs, Texas will have gone from #1 to unranked to unranked to #1.

That's pretty damn incredible, and indicative of how up and down the last year has been for Texas as a sports school in general. Here's hoping the basketball team is setting the tempo for all UT sports in 2011.

Good observation. To think we started this year unranked. I don't know if this is the best team but it's certainly among the best.

Hey, somebody's gotta take the top ranking. Why not the Horns?

And that's just the thing - unlike last year, and KU this year, Texas will TAKE the ranking. All of that #1 spot we've earned. Texas came into the season expected to finish 4th in the Big XII. We were supposed to be a non-factor this year. The most unheralded Texas team in many many years is looking like our best ever.

And let's not overlook the observation that, for a program which never saw a #1 ranking before last year, we're about to grab it two years in a row.

Times are good for UT basketball.

Let's just take care of our **** for the rest of the regular season and let the chips fall into place when the NCAA tournament brackets are announced. Then the second season begins.

I would hate a loss to Colorado or Nebraska more than anything at this point.

If I had a vote, I'd put Pitt on top. I'd prefer to not see the 'Horns No.1 but that's a silly personal superstition.

One could make cases for at least five teams being worthy of the top ranking, although Kansas' just got a little weaker.

Pitt and tOSU have a better claim to #1 right now, in my opinion. Might be better if the polls just said "screw it, here's our top five in alphabetical order."

Yes, this is a good point Gabe. I certainly had no idea how good Thompson, and Joseph would be. And I certainly would not have predicted the growth of Hamilton and Brown, and the great leadership of Balbay and Johnson.

Then I have to give a ton of credit to Coach Barnes for somehow creating a mix that has resulted in very decent chemistry.

barnes has a luxury he didnt have last season. if a player is not playing well or doing what he is supposed toi he can sit him down and we are still a good team. this wasnt the case last year.

General35 - the odd thing is that, on paper, this year is the team we shouldn't have that luxery, and last year was they year we were supposed to have depth. remember when we were 17-0 and everyone marveled at how deep we were? And how this year, we began with a bunch of supposed nobodies?

Strange times.

I agree with those comments as well, although I'm not wow'd by Pitt. If I were to rank the top 5, even with that being said I'd go...

1-OH ST
2-Pitt (we'd beat them today)
3-T

4-Duke
5-Kansas

But as expressed on other posts, all that really matters, if we continue winning, is having TULSA-->SAN ANTONIO-->HOUSTON.

Like a lot of folks, I felt earlier that tOSU was ahead of the pack, but now I think they are right in the middle of a group of several teams that have a shot to win it all. MSU seems to giving them all they can handle tonight - at least for a half.

I truly believe we have as good a shot as anyone of not just getting to the final four, but all the way to the mountaintop.

I'll play a little bit of a contrarian. I think there's something to be gained by being ranked #1: a) Learn about being considered the best and how to defend yourself (you'll be in those very shoes if you receive a #1 seed anyway - go ahead and get experience being #1), and b) Eliminate this mindset of "We don't want to be #1." I know there's this opinion about not wanting to repeat last year's fall, BUT, it sounds a little wimpy to not want to be considered the best.

Hell, embrace it. Enjoy it and go for the summit! And yes, I think that, at this point, this is the best playing Texas team ever. This is an awesome team.

Hook'em!!!

Maybe hold off on the Ohio State love a bit... there non-conference opponents were hardly a murderers row... they had Florida and South Carolina.. then.. uh..

Oh.. they had North Carolina... A & T. Wait. I see UNC.... uh...Wilmington. But, they did play Miami... of Ohio...No wait.. they played Tennessee... uh, UT-Martin.

Oakland, IUPUI, Western Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, completing the UNC chain of schools by playing UNC Asheville... that's not going to leave a lot of marks.

No Big East schools.

Let's see how they do outside of Big 10/11/whatever play when tourney time starts.
