In Texas (Austin) must I show Photo ID?

I scoured the news reports back to the Aug 30th news reports that the Voter ID Law for Texas is stricken down for now.

I further read in a bona fide voting page that shows current voting requirements for all states. Appears I do not have to show a Photo ID and can present other forms of ID to back up my Registration Card (which I could also vote without having provided I sign an Affidavit and/or do other stuff).

I can show my Voter Registration card and something of the following (among other such items)....
- a utility bill
- a bank statement

I'm preparing to vote in NW Austin with my registration card and both of those. I'll also have with me my NRA Membership card as well.

Can they demand a photo ID? I've heard they may do so anyhow.

Can I admit I have a Driver's License, (and Passport) but just refuse to show it and demand I still get to vote?

My case is this... Unless all have to show a photo ID, I should not have to.

I handed my voter registration card to the little lady, and she said; "it's asking for your id". I had to show her my TDL, don't know why. So, yes, they can ask for additional ID.

Want to open a bank account...you have to show Photo ID. Get onto an airplane...Photo ID.

But to vote....hell..we'll take anything BUT a photo ID, just give us a piece of paper that has your name on it and we're good to go.

But of course if you want to actually match the name on the voter reg card to the person in front of you....and you even mention a ID...you're a racist!!

Here's what happened.... NW Austin....

Walked in... long line at 11:20. Left so lunch crowd coud get through. Was greeted by staffer who was Pres of my HOA.

Go back at 2pm. She greets me along with the other 3 co-workers at the table. Two are in our HOA, the other chap lives across the street. So I'm not a stranger, so just showed my Registration card. They knew I was at the same address even.

After that I noticed that no one was asked for an ID. Just showed the registration card. Only peson asked for an ID was a chap who showed up without his card.

I had carried with me an envelope of papers to see what they'd have asked for or allowed.

So, mission failed.

But I did vote for the next President of the United States of America... !!

You do not, at present, need to show a photo ID to vote in Texas unless you forget to bring your voter registration card.

This is such a phony issue. I have no problem with a photo ID requirement provided the photo ID is free and easy to obtain. This is not the case in Texas (they are neither free nor easy to obtain) and it was a requirement that would disproportionately impact minority and poor voters.

I wonder why the Texas legislature would target these groups?

You need to read the opinion by the three judge panel in DC on the Texas law. It is neither free nor easy and would have disproportionately disenfranchised minorities.

Except in order to get a card you need a birth certificate which costs $20. They are not free.

Paso, ********. Why would it disenfranchise minorities, but not the people that have id's which include an awful lot of minorities? It's just a stupid excuse!

who the hell doesn't have a copy of their birth certificate?

Do you not think it's important to verify the person who is voting is who they say they are?

Why have looser standards to vote than you do for boarding an airplane or driving a car?

If you're too uneducated to understand how to get an ID, then you probably shouldn't be voting in the first place

so far the DMV issued phto ID is not free
but to say you can ONLY get it with a birth certificate is simply wrong
There several forms of ID the Texas DMV will accept

I used to be against the ID requirement until I started working in the poor neighborhood that I work in now. Many of these people are really really poor (no car, live in a shack poor). However, they ALL have a state issued ID. I worked registration so I have made copies of all of them. We didnt have a single damn person show up without an ID. I can see how the IDs would have to be free but its certainly not an unreasonable effort to obtain one.

Can any of you read the opinion? This really isn't that hard. You want a voter ID law then make it free and easy to get.

The law was a transparent attempt to disenfranchise the poor and minorities. It got struck down 3-0.

I don't have a problem with voter ID laws (even though the issue of in person voter fraud is virtually non-existent), but make them actually free and easy to get. The Texas legislature could have done this with maybe 30 mobile trucks along with a requirement that birth certificates be issued for free for voter registration purposes.

Why didn't they do this?

Paso based on the opinion you linked there is virtually no way to ever get to "free" status as anything that takes time or effort is taking away from time you could be working and potentially making money thus costing the person. However I'm not going to keep reading an opinion to look for what is "easy".

yeah, a 3 judge panel out of DC is who I want saying weather a Law we pass in Texas is okay or not. I'm not going to read 56 pages of Holder vs. State of TX.

What the hell happend to the 10th amdt? Can we TEXAS not make our own laws anymore?

We should not have to have the feds permission on weather or not a law can be enacted. The people of TX elected officials to pass laws just like this, and Obama and his minion Eric Holder don't like it.

I ask again. Why is it okay to have to show ID to get on an airplane and not at the voting booth?

Voting is a right. The Voting Rights Act was passed by Congress for a reason. Do you know what this reason was?

I understand it's a right. But we also have rules to vote by. Those rules are not being enforced. Because you can not tell me that the person who took my voter reg card today could verify that I was the person that that card belonged to.

The law was not aimed at poor or minority US citizens. It was aimed squarely at illegal aliens. And pardon me if I don't want my vote to count the same as someone who is here illegally and has NO RIGHT to vote in a US or Texas election.
