Overrated and another reason why Austin is becoming a carpetbagging destination for Californians and losing its Texas identity, albeit an independent Texas identity...which ironically strengthened its "Texanness."
I won't rush up there for the opening but I will go there here and there because their burgers and food are delicous. My tastes change from time to time and I don't eat the same burger all the time either. Welcome to Austin, animal style!
however, I will likely get one Protein Style, especially during the Summer.
Hey, no one said it's the best burger in history. Just another good new burger joint to go along with many others:
Mighty Fine, Hopdoddy, Five Guys, Moonies, P. Terry's, along with the old standbys: Hut's, Dirty's, Casino El Camino, Players, Whataburger....lotsa good burgers in Austin.
I went to an In-N-Out when they opened one in the D/FW area. Their burgers and fries are okay (not as good as Whataburger), but their shakes are excellent.
Anyone ever toyed with the idea that the burger chains are owned or at least subsidized by the cardiology wings of the hospitals? They certainly are responsible for a lot of the business those entities get.
I quit eating burgers for a few months and when I ate another one I found it lousy with grease, bloating and not really very tasty.
In the meantime I lost ten pounds and felt a lot healthier.
I've not been to the Texas In-N-Out, but when I'm in California I find it a place for predictably tasty fast food, a lot better than Burger King, McDonalds or Wendy's. But I wouldn't drive five miles out of my way for one.
I've been to the new In-N-Out in Arlington - pretty good burgers and fries, but no better than Whataburger. Definitely better than Five Guys or the chains.
Yeah but Five Guys has pretty lousy burgers. Their cheese is basically plastic.
I'm actually glad In-And-Out is opening up around here - the overrated status it has will draw people away from the places with better-tasting burgers and mean quicker service for me at those place.
I don't know if you are being totally serious or sarcastic above but just in case...
HEB is a fantastic chain of stores. Phenomenal. I have lived around the country and HEB drubs them. So just in case you were serious, we agree.
Now to the burgers. I like the Whataburger specialty burgers. I like the memories I have for WB too. Their Ketchup is tits. But I agree, their regular burgers, quite meh. I do find them better than other chains and especially the national ones.
I love me some In n Out too. I will go to both establishments from time to time depending on my mood. Both will get my money depending on my taste buds. I do say that I would rather have some enchiladas most times before burgers.
All of those places have best memories for me after midnight and looking for some grub, during the day and not full of the tasty malt and barley, wouldn't even consider eating at any of those places. It is like their lights don't even come on until after midnight.
Whataburger, In N Out, Krystal's, Carl's Jr, White Castle, James Coney Island have nothing absolutely nothing on Taco Cabana after midnight!!!!! Give me a TC anytime after a night of lively libations!!!
Holiday House was my favorite, too. There used to be two of 'em on the Drag. When they closed the one near Dobie, I had to walk down to the one under the Lone Star sign which is now Kerby Lane. Bonanza Combination was my usual choice.
The last one on Airport turned into a Chevron and now the building is fenced off and closed. I went in there one day wondering if any of the turtle shell sconces were just laying around. No sign of them.
Top Notch burgers (on Burnet road) are the closest to Holiday House. The main difference is that Top Notch puts shredded lettuce on theirs, which I like. Their fried chicken is great, too.
Agree with what some have said. In-N-Out is a good burger, cheap and fast, but also overrated. It's nothing special. If you think it's way better than the place you are getting your burgers, it's because the place you are going makes a subpar burger. If you do one thing (burgers, no chicken sandwich, no salads etc) it better be good. Burgers are simple. Use fresh ingredients, make it fresh to order. Same with fries. Cut potato fresh, fry, salt. Pretty simple. On top of that, the ingredients are cheap. We're not talking about prime rib here. If you can't consistently make a burger as good as In-N-Out, you really aren't trying.
Part of their appeal is that it's fast and cheap and consistent. The downside to that it that it's an assembly line, from ordering, to cooking to eating. No atmosphere. Just fill your face and get out.
I think that part of the In-N-Out hype is that if when you are looking for a burger, from a chain that cost $6.00 with fries and a drink included, your other choices are McDonald, Burgerking etc (ie ****). In-N-Out is awesome, compared to McDonalds.
