I don't want to reveal too much about as the plot definitely turns several times.
Farrell is a hitman who is forced to hole up in a town in Belgium after a difficult job. He's definitely not impressed with the town or the locals. It's got a little bit of everything. The dialogue is outstanding, and the audience was laughing throughout.
Very unPC. Watch it while it's new to the theaters while the crowds are large and before anyone spoils it for you.
It's based in a Belgium town called Bruges. The cinematography might as well have been put together by the Bruges Chamber of Commerce. With it's canals, it resembles Venice, only not nearly as grimy, and Western European medieval architecture rather than southern Italy.
Two hitmen from London are sent there to cool their heels after they complete a job. They're told to wait for further instructions. The older hitman falls in love with Bruges, taking on the role of a sightseer and enjoying the heck out of himself. The younger hitman keeps calling it a "********," saying he's "from Dublin. If I was from a farm and I was retarded, sure, I'd like the place...but I'm not." For a variety of reasons --- most especially because he seemingly finds the love of his life in a local girl --- the younger hitman begins to enjoy himself...sort of...although he still hates the town itself.
The movie has at least a dozen quotable lines throughout. I was rolling. Then, suddenly, it takes a serious turn. For the rest of the movie, it shifts tone rapidly and often, going from serious, to tragic, to hilarious, to romantic, pretty much successful every time, which is tough to do.
For people who like straightforward comedies, this is not for you. It's not action packed. It's for people who like their movies a little quirky. For those people, it's a must see. Do not miss it.
Just got back from seeing this film. The trailer made it look like it would be a quirky movie, which I like, but I was not expecting too much from this film.
This movie turned out to be so very much more than I expected. It's a fantastic film. I highly recommend it. You will be laughing one minute and then jolted into becoming quite sombre. Then you are off to the races again. Very well written and directed. There was not one point in the movie that the story was allowed to drag in transition. I have never thought of Collin Farrell as a very strong actor, but he was very good in this role. Probably the best acting of his career, but I admit I have not seen all of his work.
I'm excited about seeing this, especially since I spent a few days in Bruges last year. That's a nice little town. It's touristy, but not annoyingly so. And the beer kicks ***.
