After being lost in translation myself for awhile, I find I've seen 242 of them.
Some of my personal favorites, as I quickly read through the list today, appear to be:
I've been watching movies a long time and almost all the post 1950 American films I first viewed in an actual theater on a big screen during their initial release.
"The Godfather, I & II,"
"Goodfellas,"
"Leon,"
"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,"
"To Kill a Mockingbird,"
"Singin' in the Rain,"
"The Bridge on the River Kwai,"
"Fargo,"
"Cool Hand Luke,"
"No Country for Old Men,"
"Casino,"
"Annie Hall,"
"Gone with the Wind,"
"The Grapes of Wrath,"
"Ben-Hur,"
"The Graduate,"
"The Hustler,"
"Rosemary's Baby" and
"Manhattan."
I could have left off, in a few cases, or at least rated somewhat lower:
"Shindler's List,"
"Die Hard,"
"The Elephant Man,"
"Gran Torino,"
"Citizen Kane,"
"Into the Wild,"
"Dog Day Afternoon,"
"District 9,"
"The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,"
"Shutter Island,"
And, were I ever asked to produce such an argumentative, subjective list, I might consider finding a place for these flicks:
"My Fair Lady,"
Probably "Saturday Night Fever,"
Paul Newman's "Hud" or "Hombre," either or both,
John Ford's "My Darling Clementine" for the best movie yet about the Earps, the Clantons, Tombstone and the OK Corral, IMHO,
John Huston's "The African Queen," even with all its canned wildlife footage,
Possibly Kevin Costner's "Open Range,"
And, perhaps, Sidney Lumet's "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead."
Plus Richard Lester's "A Hard Day's Night" starring The Beatles.
And just to bring this lengthy post about movies to an end, I'll mention "The Last Picture Show."
