iMac/(dot)Mac question

Looking to buy a Mac for the first time (don't want to debate that part of the issue). I went to the Apple store and the salesman was recommending the .Mac (dot)Mac program. I did some looking online, and it looks pretty cool. Has anyone ever used it/know anything about it?

.Mac does some neat things all in one place, but most of what it does can be found for free on the web. I'd take a look at Google Apps, for example, as a free alternative.

If it was me, I'd probably skip it and put the hundred bucks toward one of those Time Capsule drives.

I've used .Mac for years. It's true that many of its features can be found around the web if you're willing to track them down, although most of them will not be as tightly integrated with the apps on your Mac. For me it's a matter of convenience and complete integration that are attractive and worth the fee. If you think you'd use several of its features then its worth a serious look. There's probably some kind of free trial period so you don't have anything to lose by giving it a try. Also, you should get a discount on .Mac when you buy your Mac. Just leave the .Mac box sealed until you've decided after your trial period. You can then return it if you decide not to go ahead.

yeah, my wife will do a lot of work at home, and the ability to remotely access her documents and presentations with the iDoc (i think that's what it's called) is pretty tempting.

agree most of the stuff is available for free elsewhere, but the $99 you pay for ease, convinience and integration is well worth it. plus there are a few proprietary features.

I have been a user for years. I think they could do some stuff to improve it, but as it is it is great.

example - my 67 year old father posts pics, videos and other stuff to the web. .mac allows that to happen because of its integration with the apple photo management and video editing software.

i've used it since its inception. i wish they would pay more attention to it and update and add features. but for what it does, it does it well. i use it mostly to house my personal website and to host photos. plus i put files on there for my clients to download. makes it super easy for them to get large files i can't email to them.

yeah, i also bought my applecare policy for my new macpro from a company callled lacomputercompany.com

i was skeptical but i just registered it last week and it seems to work fine. saved something like $60 or so.
