I'm paying DirecTV $1K a year for...

...iCarly and Hannah Montana? Oh yeah, and ESPN too. Thinking about going OTA to get my locals, but that means I give up ESPN. That's a lot of drinking money for the bar in Denver that shows the 5-odd Longhorn games each that don't make it on ABC. Someone tell me what I'm missing here.

Are you familiar with ESPN360 and Justin.tv? Between the two, I didn't miss a single Longhorn football game from Florida last season and caught most of the basketball games.

I think beatha is on to something. We went one or two years without any kind of cable TV. It was good in that I had to actually want to watch a game really bad in order to go to a bowlilng alley, etc. to watch it. I watched the '05 baseball championship at a bowling alley. Great stuff.

Now, with these online outlets, it's even easier.

It sounds like you have a bad plan, or are paying for extras (HD/DVR). Dish has their basic plan for $30 a month. Even with tax, that's less than $500 a year. You could still get locals OTA in HD.

That's what I pay as well, and I couldn't imagine watching shows only in SD and without a DVR.

You could get some freebies (such as free HD for a year, etc) by just asking. They always seem to have some sort of bone to throw at customers who either say it's too expensive or are about to cancel.

So instead of taking a drastic step like cutting the sat all together, just get rid of extras. I doubt your kids will complain about hannah montana in SD.

What really pisses me off (and one of the reasons I don't get cable at all) is they put the regional Fox Sports channels on the 2nd tier. The only reason I even would want cable is to watch sports, and FoxSW is one of them I'd want.
