Anyone here do much cooking with a Wok.

I'm just getting started with wok cooking and would like to buy a quality Wok

Any advise?

I have an electric stove and they suck at woks unless it is a cast iron wok, I got one at expo in the BBQ department, I heat that son of a gun up white hot and throw all my stuff in and go to town.

as far as regular woks go head down to the local oriental market to get one from the people that know all about them.

Cast iron woks do have their virtues. Lodge has made several over the years, and here's the current model:

Yes, it's preseasoned, but you'll still want to go to the trouble of seasoning yourself. The Lodge factory seasoning is not as substantial as what you can achieve in your own oven.

You don't need a "quality" wok. Carbon steel is the most common kind. Like cast-iron, you should season them. If it can fit your gas stove, or you want to get a wok ring, a round-bottom wok is preferred. Flat bottom will be necessary for electric stoves. Carbon steel woks can be found for $10-$20 at most Asian supermarkets. Try to get one around 14", hopefully that will fit your stove.

Whatever you do, stay away from teflon. Many kinds of wok cooking are meant to be done with high heat, which can actually damage teflon.

I agree with the above poster. Just pick up a good carbon steel wok at a restuarant supply store. I picked one up for about $15. It is all about the way that it is seasoned. I have a ring that I use on my gas stove with the rounded bottom wok. I use it all of the time. i can make a full meal in 3-5 minutes in a wok.

Get one, get it seasoned right, and use the heck out of it.
