Illinois city offering reparations money to black folks

In Likely First, Chicago Suburb Of Evanston Approves Reparations For Black Residents

Let's do some math.

The city authorized 10 million to fund the program and will pay each qualifying person $25,000

It applies to black residents of Evanston from 1919 to 1969 OR someone who is a direct descendant of a resident.

According to the 1970 census, Evanston had approx 13,000 black residents. I'm going to assume that 1969 was similar.

So for one year, that's 13,000 x $25,000 = 325 million dollars.

And that's just for one year, and just for the residents not including the direct descendants.

Evanston might need to up their reparations budget a little.

So, if an Illinois family had a member who was a Union soldier and they died in a Civil War battle to free the slaves... Are THEY due any reparations from the state of Illinois?

So when will they approve reparations for the Irish who were discriminated against 150 years ago, and Italians who were discriminated against 120 years ago?

"They" don't care about whites. It's that simple.

White guilt is sweeping the country, led by white, guilt-ridden liberals. We're on a collective guilt trip the likes of which we've never seen before. I'm sure you've noticed the changes. In TV advertising these days, most commercials feature blacks. Many commercials are exclusively black actors. You can't watch a golf match (the whitest sport around) without being lectured about inequality during commercials, and you know about the NBA and NFL. Those are efforts by those companies and organizations to make a statement; "we're riddled with white shame and are going to correct our previously evil ways, so don't come after us", more that they are to sell products.

The reparations will require a group to administer the disbursement of those funds. Does that group get paid out of the $10MM?

What is a direct descendant? First generation, second generation, etc? How does this get verified?

If the $10MM is just for descendants (no administrative fees), at $25k per, that only pays 400 people. What happens when recipient 401, 402, 403, etc. come for "their" money? I'm sure it will be a "mostly peaceful" protest.

Anyone for a Federal bailout to pay the remaining $315MM+ that has been promised? Apparently no one in Evanston has a calculator.

As a Scots/Irish descendant whose family MIGHT have been forced to immigrate as indentured servants, I want my money from the UK. Paid in Bitcoin and single malt Scotch.

Each resident or each household? PBS evening news said the latter.

Not a believer in reparations. This is being funded through a Marijuana tax and some charity org.

If these payments are truly being made or not made based on the race of the recipient, I don't see how they hold up in court.

I know this is not PC but shouldn't blacks expecting reparations be required to show damages? Had slavery never occurred a large percentage of them would be stuck in some 3rd world African country most of which are battling famine, malaria, widespread violence, and poverty. I would certainly agree that the actual slaves deserved reparations but it's hard to argue their descendants are worse off because of slavery.

But of course, the Left contends that slavery (but only by white people - Arab and tribal slavery are fine) and European colonialism are the reason Africa is messed up today. Had there been no white slavery or colonialism, Africa would be a bastian of civilization, peace, innovation, freedom, etc. So either way, it's always Whitey's fault.

So we owe reparations to blacks in Africa too?

interesting read. I call bs on this "
Perversely, Native American ownership of black slaves came about as a way for Native Americans to illustrate their societal sophistication to white settlers. “They were working hard to comply with government dictates that told native people that in order to be protected and secure in their land base, they had to prove their level of ‘civilization,’” Miles explained.
HAD to blame whitey
In a previous paragraph it was noted all tribes for hundreds of years had slaves

What did I have to do with slavery?

From my research, my mother's family was in South Carolina pre-American Revolution and my father's family MAY have been in Texas prior to the Alamo. (Still working on that part).

In the end, if this becomes a Federal mandate, what does slavery have to do with me and why should I pay for it? I was born in 1960, not 1860.

Great messages. It is absurd to propose Indians (Native Americans, whatever) had any slaves to appease white man! How dumb.

Hard to believe the writer found a way to blame Whitey for tribes owning slaves.
Someone on here posted there is literally nothing Lefties can't blame on Whitey.
This may have proved it

Slavery has existed almost as long as humans have been on this planet. Let that sink in. Sad, but true. Unfortunately, the narrative today is that slavery only existed in the U.S.
Slavery still exists across the globe, even in Africa. Why is this not a discussion point and why is the U.S. always the villain?

Because discussion is almost as hard as winning.

You are right to ask but you know we are the only ones who could be guilted
Well the only ones wuth money
All the Africans who sold other Africans are still poor hundreds of years later

You may think that's a joke, but it's a real issue in Europe. It'll get raised in America at some point as the issue becomes more viable. Back in 2001 when I was in the Young Conservatives of Texas at Baylor, our newspaper ran the David Horowitz critique of slavery reparations. The response from liberals was eye rolls and being told, "you guys are paranoid. Nobody wants slavery reparations." Well, here we are.

It's because the discussion is rigged, and there are clear (though unspoken) rules of the alleged "discussion.". If you breach them, you're a racist and a slavery apologist.

First, you can't contextualize. What other nations were or weren't doing at the time is off limits. You must judge Western actors entirely in a vacuum and according to woke standards of today, not what was socially acceptable at the time.

Second, subsequent remedial measures taken by the West (such as banning slavery, fighting a civil war to stop it, civil rights protections, and welfare programs that disproportionately aid descendants of slaves) are evidence of guilt, not a sign of remorse or a moral improvement.

Third, modern day slavery (which is all over Africa and Asia - as it was when the West had slavery) is off limits.

Fourth, when you look at the lives of slaves, you have to compare them with their owners, not of poor whites in the West and definitely not to the lives the slaves would likely have lived had they stayed in Africa.

The reason for these rules is that the goal isn't a true intellectual inquiry or quest for improvement but to build momentum for a preferred policy outcome of massive wealth redistribution imposed by totalitarian governments. Well, if you allow for a true discussion that looks at these facets, Whitey simply doesn't look bad enough to build support for anything radical. In fact, in context, Whitey not only looks pretty good. He looks like about the most ethical and humanitarian force in the history of humanity.

Shut up!

Is it enough to "identify," or do you have to actually be black?

Deep down I have always been black. I look in the mirror and I see white, but I have always identified as being black. I have lived two lives, on the outside I acted like I was white but deep down I was black, I loved the series Martin, and listened to the Black Eyed Peas. I secretly love my fried chicken with hot sauce. When I lisen to Rap music I even clap on 2 and 4. If that isn't black I don't know what is.

I'm black and I'm proud, now where is my damn check!!!

But do you belly laugh when you hear the "jokes" in Blackish?
