According to this article and to Lamar Smith bo has crafted new standards for treatment of detained illegals. The link is Daily Caller but the information from the ICE is verifiable'In the spirit of detention reform, in 2011, for the first time since 2008, ICE finished its revision of detention standards for those being held for being in the country illegally. Those new standards were released this month. ICE has already started to implement the changes.

“PBNDS 2011 is crafted to improve medical and mental health services, increase access to legal services and religious opportunities, improve communication with detainees with limited English proficiency, improve the process for reporting and responding to complaints, reinforce protections against sexual abuse and assault, and increase recreation and visitation,” an ICE representative explained in its PBNDS fact sheet.

According to Smith, however, the revisions amount to a vast and expensive expansion of privileges.

“The Obama administration’s new detention manual is more like a hospitality guideline for illegal .

The administration goes beyond common sense to accommodate illegal immigrants and treats them better than citizens in federal custody.”

The standards chronicle a wide range of amenities and rights accorded to each detainee during their stay, including extensive regulations on things such as body searches, room space, recreational time, visitation, the interaction ICE officials can have with them and food expectations — including adherence to detainee dietary restrictions. The standards also outline a wide range of medical procedures available to those in detention facilities, including services such as abortion access, hormone treatments for transgendered people, dental work and a 15-day supply of medications upon release, deportation or transfer.

6721, I'm still baffled - what is it that folks don't understand about the word "illegal?" These illegal immigrants are criminals - they are violating our law the instant they step onto American territory without proper authorization. They should be treated no better nor no worse than our citizens who violate the law - and they should be either (a) detained and extradited to face criminal charges for serious crimes, if warrants exist, or (b) deported and banned from entering the country.

Darker skin and Spanish language have nothing to do with anything here. I respect the hell out of most of the people I know of Mexican heritage. Good folks with a great work ethic.

Were talking about people here illegally though. They need to be sent home.

major, I'm an ER doctor who has spent nearly 20 years staffing urban emergency rooms, and a BIG % of my time every single day for those two decades was spent taking care of illegal immigrants. The issues are complex -- medically, financially, ethically, and morally.

But you presume to know more than I do about the nuances of healthcare and the rights of illegal immigrants.... so much more, in fact, that you think you can call me foolish and presume to know where I have and haven't been in my life?

This thread is like a microcosm of the Republican party today. A bunch of angry repubs, getting even more stoked up by @-holes like Limbaugh and Hannity. And the lone sane voice (Horn89), being drowned out by the TP types.

I don't have the time or the energy to respond individually to everyone calling me out for stating what seem like very basic truths, so I'll just say this:

The thread was started about WHAT LEVEL OF HEALTHCARE SHOULD WE PROVIDE TO "THOSE BEING HELD FOR BEING HERE ILLEGALLY."

I tried to make what I thought was a very basic, simple point -- that civilized nations, in fact, do owe SOME level of healthcare even to those who break the law. In the cases referenced by the original post, the crime in question seems to be crossing a river in search of a better life.

If you want to start a "send all the illegals home" thread, or a "what if an illegal commits a felony" thread, or whatever, then by all means do so.

The easy way to solve this problem - allow any public school system (or any taxpaying resident of a school system) or medical provider who has to bear costs because of illegal immigrants to bill and if necessary sue the immigrant's employer for the cost.

Accordingly, if an illegal immigrant goes to the ER for an illness, let the hospital and ER docs like Horn89 treat him. Let them bill the immigrant first. When he doesn't pay after say 90 days, let them bill his employer. If they don't pay within 90 days, let the hospital and ER doc sue the employer.

The illegal immigration problem will be over in about 15 minutes.
 
I heard on the radio this week that IF & WHEN ICE ever actually deports any "undocumented guests", they will no longer just turn them out at the border. Now, U.S. taxpayers are going to PAY TO FLY THEM BACK TO THEIR NEAREST MAJOR CITY!!!!! The rationale for flying them is that at the border they were being preyed upon by the Mexican gangs.


This is just stupid. When I'm president, I'm gonna appoint Arizona Sherriff Joe Araipo head of ICE. He'll treat 'em tough but fair. That's all they deserve.
