If you got paid the exact same amount per hour/day

blue collar job or white collar job? 100k, 200k, whatever number you want to use. Would you rather be a ditch digger or a lawyer.

And yes, I raelize it's a hypothetical.

I'd like to think of myself as more of a blue collar guy myself.

Blue collar.

I was never happier than when I was doing something that I had to physically work at.

I was in better shape, I was stronger, and I always felt a greater sense of accomplishment when I finished a job.

BA, that's sort of what I'm getting at. Working at Dell, I have to juggle a crap load of **** in the air. But, I think ditch digging could get monotonous, tiresome as well. And, there's a certain stigma against blue collar work.

Can I pick 2 jobs? Pirate Doctor... enough said.

That would be no collar, Napoleon.

If you got paid the same either way I don't see how you could not choose a blue collar job. Why sit in an office watching another gorgeous day go by when you could be outside enjoying it?

Many blue collar jobs are terrible for your body, not to mention intellectually stultifying. And then there is the sense of achieving very little with your accumulated time. A job that leaves you physically exhausted may be a nice change of pace on occasion, but it's a hard way to spend a decade.

I have a white collar job, but my dad was blue collar (baked, drove cabs, etc.). Disabused me of any romanticism I had towards the work.

On the other hand, farming has always seemed rewarding to me. Probably b/c I know nothing about it.

I worked at carpentry, roofing, mason's helper, general laborer for 4 years. It gets really hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I learned a lot of valuable skills but I was glad to start working in an office when I finally got around to it. Plus whoever said that over the long run it is very hard on your body was right.

"White collar, because I am lazy, but realize others should be rewarded more than I do for doing real hard sweaty work and effort."

Exactly what I thought

You might feel a sense of accomplishment when you finish a day long outside project at your house. But do that day-in and day-out, cold rainy weather, or scorching hot.... I don't think being outside would turn out to be all that great.

Ask the blue-collar guy if he would rather be inside, chatting up the new cute intern, or checking out Hornfans half the day.

very hard question - but if you said something other than ditch digger -say park ranger no question - park ranger.

I'd prefer most things outdoor to being an investmentbanker if the money were even reasonably close.

Didn't have to be ditch digger. Let's say painter, of course that would be multi-collored collar. Heck, a janitor?

I used to unload semi trucks and stocked shelves. I loved it. I loved seeing the product moved and put up nicely and I loved the people that I worked with. It could be mind numbing sometimes, but that was more when I had to work the floor (This was a retail place). I would pick that over white collar work.

i work at home wearing a tshirt and shorts on most days. when i actually put on clothes. i'm in sales. when i'm not at home, i'm wearing a jacket and tie and talking to people. i'm good at it. i can't say i'd prefer to dig ditches or paint or anything blue collar... UNLESS it was my own company and i was making more money. but for the some money, i'll sit here and be out of shape.

When I used to work for a very large software company I'd pass the guys mowing the grass on our campus. As I stressed out over what I needed to do that day my mind always gravitated to "damn that would be a great job if I could support my family with my current income". Mowing the grass is instant gratification. It's low stress, good exercise and work that "stays at the office".

When I retire I may take up that work. At a minimum I might someday own my own landscaping company focusing on yard/grounds maintenance.

Husker, that kind of sums it up. When I'm outside on break or come back from my two hour lunch, I watch the guys mow the lawn and think "that doesn't look too bad."
