........give 2002's "Dummy" a try.
The Link
We got it from NETFLIX.
Adrien Brody, Milla Jovovich, Illeana Douglas, Vera Farmigia and Jessica Walter and Ron Liebman (who are wife and husband in real life) star in this flick about a functioning dysfunctional family with quirky, neurotic, unfulfilled members and friends.
As I indicated in this post's subject line above, "Dummy" reminded me a whole lot of that 2012 movie which garnered the Best Actress statuette for Jennifer Lawrence plus Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director (David O. Russell), Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Acting noms for its three other main role players (Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver).
"SLP" was my favorite motion picture released last year and also is the first film receiving Oscar nominations from The Academy for all four of its acting categories since Warren Beatty's "Reds"did that, 31 years earlier.
Anyways, I thought any flick so reminiscent of "SLP" might be worth a recommendation to the right audience.
"Dummy" isn't quite as good as "SLP," but it has a very fine cast, many worthwhile moments, is pretty darn funny and it's worth a rental, IMHO, for the right video viewers.
Because it does offer much humor, good music, great characters, a few surprises and a lot of scripted excellence.
The screenplay of "Dummy" is very interesting; it's just not as streamlined and tight as the story in "Silver Linings Playbook."
In fact, Jennifer Lawrence in her "SLP" role benefited (and delivered) playing a character who, alone, was as screwed up, needy, tough, talented, interesting and memorable as the three youngest females (Jovovich, Douglas and Farmigia) in "Dummy" are combined.
And, I'll submit, that's why Miss Lawrence so well-deserved her prestigious, golden, Academy award.
Nevertheless, "Dummy" was an unexpectedly nice viewing treat on a slow night for me and my wife.
Perhaps, you'd also enjoy it.
Thoughts?
