The Big XII should kick Missouri out now whether they choose to leave or not. Missouri has a lazy fan base and they haven't even been to a BCS or top tier bowl since they lost the Orange Bowl in the 1969 season. I have no idea if they've ever won a top tier bowl game.
BCS Bowl wins since 2005:
West Virginia - 2.
TCU - 1.
Louisville - 1.
"The Four Runaways" (NU/CU/Aggy/Mizzou) combined - Zero.
It is clear that geography and the state of Texas are important to the Big 12. Cincy/Rutgers are off the list.
IMO, University of Houston should be considered.
Add TCU (in the works),
Add BYU (nationwide interest?),
Add AF (grab part of Colorado and pull nationwide interest),
Add Boise St (small but strong football, pull some northwest/mountain interest),
Add New Mexico (state university, adds entire state)
Add UTEP (adds more of West TX and NM watchers)
Add Tulsa (gives OK more say in conference, more in-state rivalry)
If MU leaves and ND declines AGAIN, add Louisville or UH.
16 teams covering Near and Mid West (8 states), strong football conference, good basketball, 2 time zones (3 if Louisville joins), lots of local rivalry possibilities with added teams,.
TCU, BYU, AF, Boise, NM, UTEP, TxTech, Bay - Mountain Div
UT, OU, OkSt, KU, KSt, Iowa St, Tulsa, Mizz (or Louisville or UH) - Plains Div
AND when UT and OU leave in a few years, that will leave a decent conference intact that protects all the schools that helped keep the Big12 alive.
It is not perfect but perfection is hard to come by. It works! Added schools would be glad to join. Existing schools would be satisfied for awhile with the increased TV footprint, $$ and stability. Super conference precedent will be set.
According to ESPN: "Hargis says the Big 12 is still considering expansion options and would prefer schools that are in the league's footprint and that would not dilute the revenue the current members are generating."
Well, if true, that statement bites. Does that mean BYU is out and a Tulsa, UTEP, or Houston is now more likely?
Any conference would prefer new teams that didn't dilute their take but not many teams out there that might be available are able to do that unless you are willing to cut loose some of your own bottom teams in the process.
BYU seems like it would draw better than current average interest by the networks thus increasing average revenues. ND definitely would. Boise has a lot of national recognition and might increase the average but nothing other than football is a plus.
But who else that reasonably would be available and willing? USF maybe due to size and local Florida market but doubtful. Remaining Big East teams - WV might but more than one team is needed in the"east" to make much sense so then you look at a WV, USF, Cincinnati, Louisville, UConn, Rutgers package or some combination. This would provide a large eastern footprint. And you better do that before the ACC takes the cream leaving the Big 12 the curd. So maybe you look at a 16 team alliance between the B12 and Big East remainder, shift Mizzou & TCU to the east and voila' - good to go!
I don't see any other possibilities to pick from - ACC is solid except maybe if SEC steals someone. SEC, B1G & PAC are solid. Not many that increase average revenue take is my opinion.
I am not advocating a new eastern division to the Big 12 or a super conference. I am just looking at it from an increased average revenue viewpoint. My preference is 10 teams but that won't last long. So go to 12 by adding TCU, BYU & Boise St while keeping Mizzou. Put TT, TCU, Boise, BYU, Iowa St & Baylor in West Division. UT, OU, OkSt, Miz,KU & KSt in the East.
