If it sounded like the 'Obama of old'...

that's because it was. Almost literally.

The guy's basically a wind-up doll at this point. Great vido by the RNC - they need to be hammering this stuff if they want to win in November.

That's really funny. One would hope that he would change his rhetoric.....

I guess the majority of Americans like reruns, which is why a CBS News poll today showed that 91% (NINETY-ONE PERCENT) APPROVED of last night's SOTU proposals, and 9% didn't.

Unlike ultra-partisan Repcons, the overwhelming majority understand that far from being "promises not kept", he wasn't able to accomplish what he wanted in the last 3 years because of Republican obstructionism, so he proposed it again.

I think he'll have better luck after his reelection.

I think 91% of the posters here are part of the 9% who didn't like his speech.

I'd like to see what the economy would be like if he had been allowed to pass a jobs bill and had we skipped the budget drama last summer and passed the Bowles Simpson bi-partisan plan.

Another recent poll showed improved optimism over the economy and jobs as more jobs are slowly added. This board is where i come to, to understand the viewpoints of the "9%"

Well at least the West Wing staff did not waste a lot of time on the speech. Really, I wonder what the hell they do. They regurgitate State of the Union speeches. They did not have time to offer up a health care proposal. They do not have time to propose a budget that congress doesn't scoff at. They were uninvolved in the debt ceiling deal. What in the world do they do with their time and salary. Campaigning I suppose. It is all they know apparently.

I liked his speech- it reminded me of another US President- he was inspirational, he made people optimistic and got us to go good things even if at times there was not certainty of success- his name was Ronald Reagan. A great inspirational speaker, someone Clinton imitated in some of his "I feel your pain" speeches.

Obama's reference to Seal Team 6 working together despite differences in their politics to do great things was certainly new, very appropriate, and the right thing for Congress to hear. I'll take that in a SOTU anytime.

Prod, I saw the same news person, and what was said was RR would have a hard time in the New Republican party and probably wouldn't make it through these primaries because he WOULD work w/ the opposition party - as he did for 8 yrs - and because he DID raise taxes / let the Dem Congress increase taxes.

And the New Republicans say:

Representative Richard Nugent, a freshman Republican from Florida, called Reagan’s tax increases “ancient history,” saying, “I live in the present."

“I’m more focused on what’s happening today,” said Senator Marco Rubio, another Florida Republican.

Senator Jon Kyl, the chamber’s second-ranking Republican, said, “Reagan was in a situation where he had to compromise in order to get some things done” and “presidents sign lots of things that they’re not for."

Ronald Reagan DID have a hard time getting through Republican primaries. It took him two tries to win the nomination. This is nothing new. To compare him to Obama in any way shape or form is a joke though. Reagan worked with people, negotiated deals, etc. Obama gives speeches and tweets.

If you don't think that Obama has tried to work w/ McConnell and Boehner on a number of issues and has received the back of their hands, then you are deaf, dumb, and blind.

Mitch's entire agenda for 3 yrs - since day 1 - has been his one-term obsession. Boehner has been nutlessly scared of the TP since he became Speaker.

It takes a minute to find the YouTube clip of Mitch McConnell saying his number one priority in Congress was to make Obama a one term President.

Try negotiating anything with that guy- and a House Speaker who has less power than the 10% minority of his own party who vote against his wishes repeatedly.

Those guys were put in place for a reason -- to stop Obama. His first two years were just too reckless and the American people had enough.
