If any starting QB EVER gets hurt while Mack is HC

That's Right

we are ******. 4 straight handoffs to the fullback up the middle? That's how Antwan Cobb tore his ACL, and that's why our backups will NEVER be prepared to take over in case of injury. We don't let our backups get any real game experience. John Chiles looked like he was royally f'n pissed comin off the field in the end. He looked like he was thinking "why the **** am I playing QB if my biggest role on the team is to line up at WR as a decoy to draw attention away from other people?" We could put Aundre McGasky in at Chiles' spot and he could do the same thing. Now, I am very pleased with the way this team has looked, but this has been on my mind for years, and something needs to change. Rant over.

I saw that expression, too. He was pretty pissed after all the hand-offs with 8-9 min left in the 4th. Would have been a good opportunity to get him some experience.

I mean seriously, what is John Chiles role on our team? A highly-recruited decoy? Let the kid throw a pass or 2 God forbid we ever actually need him to throw the ball.

I agree. These are the games where the backups are supposed to get some playing time. I was scratching my head when Colt tried to lower his shoulder on a third down play with no hope of getting a first down. I applaud the effort, but I thought that it would be a shame to risk your season in that situation. A few years ago Mack made a big deal about giving the backup QB some playing time early when it counted to get some experience. I guess he has changed his mind. Chiles didn't get any real good reps in this game.

On a slightly different note, on one of the "Q package" plays, Chiles ran a flare route and was WIDE OPEN, but Colt had already rolled away from him and either ran for no gain or threw the ball away...don't remember.

On the one hand I'm happy that he is being used as a decoy so that he doesn't just fill the "Brett Robin Shovel Pass Rollplayer Position" but on the other, he isn't being used properly.

I can't blame him. That is like last year when Okie Lite put Bobby Reid in to sit on the ball for a series when he hadn't played in the rest of the game. I can't blame Chiles for being upset by that. There are several players (Chiles, D.J. Grant and the other WRs that haven't seen a snap) who should've gotten some experience in these last two games.

I watched the game and I am confused as to why Chiles is not given more of a chance to throw in live games for Texas. If there was a good time to do it, would it not be early in the season, early in the fourth quarter of a blowout against UTEP?

Regardless, I'm sure Chiles will still be a threat in some fancy package at the RRR/S.

Well, we weren't ****** when Walton got hurt, and we weren't ****** when Applewhite got hurt. The difference between then and now is that Chiles is clearly neither Applewhite or Simms in passing ability, nor will he ever be in all likelihood. Could he get better with more reps in actual gametime? Yes, probably so. I still think the guy could contribute more at another position, but the longer he stays at QB the less chance he has of making any meaningful impact anywhere.

Cobb tore his ACL because football is a rough sport -- it happens. Teams have made reputations over the years by making no secret of what the next play will be and daring defenses to stop it. His injury was bad luck, and it sucked. I disagreed with you about this issue last year and still do. I think it's a little stupid to run the same play over and over, but not because it puts players at risk.

As far as letting backups play, I don't know what you are talking about. We are deep in the OL because we let backups play. We saw 4 players at RB last night. We have no depth to play at TE. We saw 6 different receivers catch the ball. We played 21 players on defense last night, nearly all of them saw the field before the game got out of hand.

There have been years where I would have agreed with you on not playing backups. Last year, and this year so far, we have seen plenty of guys hit the field.

I think the OP (and thread) is referring specifically to the backup QB position, not the general concept of playing backups across the field. And I agree with him; if Chiles isn't getting meaningful reps in a game like this, his first "real" game experience leading the offense this year might be the last 3 quarters in the RRS, and that would Suck. Huge. Ones.

Well, alright.

The thing that sucked last night was that we didn't put the game away early. If UTEP had scored and made it a one possession game in the 3rd, I would be more disturbed than I am with the fact that Chiles didn't play sooner. I think leaving Colt in was the right decision up until the two quick scores to start the 4th.

I think most teams in college football (or football at any level) are screwed to some extent when their starter at QB goes down. Is this coaching staff really so out of line with the rest of the football world when it comes to playing backups? I just don't think so. I agree that we are on the conservative side of the argument in that regard, I'll give you that.

Chiles' situation is screwy, to be sure.

The reality is that Colt is our star starter, and that John is (nothing but) a backup QB. I agree we would be screwed if Colt went down and that our coaches have a poor history of managing & developing our backup QBs properly (e.g. Chance Mock and Jevan Snead). That said, we never really had a good backup to Vince when he was here either... Matt Nordgren had decent talent but was clearly and without question relegated to 2nd string. Of course, most of us think/know that Chiles has lots of potential to be a difference-maker but, as noted earlier, that "difference making" isn't ever likely to be at the QB position. So it's indeed a screwy situation.

Chiles looked pretty angry when he just came in the game. Maybe it was because he was just handing off instead of actually running an offense. Let the kid throw some passes, the horns were up by 29 points. It was kind of pathetic that no coach was talking to Chiles when he came off the field (but kudoes to Colt for trying to help).

Chiles' situation is not great. There is no way he beats out Colt (unless Colt gets hurt) and he probably won't beat out Gilbert (who has an NFL arm). It is very unlikely that Chiles plays QB in the NFL. At the end of this season (or maybe even sooner) he might want to figure out where he is most likely to succeed in the NFL (maybe wide receiver or safety?) and play that position in college so that when he graduates, he has had the benefit of a couple of years coaching/practise.

Chiles is a major talent but the stars just did not line up for him at UT.

I actually have never understood the philosophy where you run your QB a lot and do not develop a backup QB.

I agree with the thoughts in this thread. But, what happened to the slash concept? UTEP'S backup burned us a few times just running the ball.

And, what talent does John possess? I missed last weeks game, but last year in limited action, I never saw him look as explosive as the UTEP backup did on two or three plays last night.

I think that Chiles and Harris both deserve to play especially when the game is out of reach. And they just shouldn't come in just to hand the freakin ball off either!

Have to agree with the post that said that our biggest problem last night was our O's failure to put the game away in the third quarter. We finally got it going again in the fourth, but by then, it was too late to get Chiles any meaningful snaps.

Mack's usual practice is that when the team is up by more than two scores in the fourth quarter, he shuts everything down and runs out the clock. I understand not wanting to risk injury to your key players when the game is out of hand, but the flipside of that is that we may miss some opportunities to develop an experienced backup for our starting QB if he is injured.

Then again, there is another part of me that wonders how the Chiles experiment is working out. I realize we are probably saving a few tricks up our sleeve for Stoopsie and friends with the "Q" package, but has Chiles shown anything that would merit more snaps earlier in the game at this point? I think Chiles is a tremendous athlete and potentially a valuable asset to our team, but there may come a point where we have to do a Henry Melton and reevaluate his situation to see where he makes the most sense.

Chiles has not shown that he can pass on this level. Mack didn't like the beating that Colt was starting to take and needed someone to finish the game. The question is when will Harris be acknowledged as number 2 QB.

Chiles needs to realize his QB days are behind him and get on being a slash type player. Gilbert (or someone else not on campus now) will be the QB in Chiles senior season.

Chiles should give up on the QB position and play another position that allows him to shine ... or transfer.

I agree though, it's pathetic that all we do is hand the ball off with our backup QB's ... year after year.

I'm inclined to agree that the coaching staff seemingly doesn't know what to do with Chiles. Everything heard from him is that he wants to be a quarterback. You'd think GD's experience with Vince would give him a little insight into how to develop athletes like this.

I also agree that him being put in last night looked perfunctory. But, he is the back up quarterback. It's unfortunate that another good team victory is soured slightly by his noticeable displeasure.

If we're still wondering what Chiles role is in our offense beyond the obvious (2nd string QB), in the coming weeks I will be really disappointed. I thought we should of had Chiles in way earlier while the game was still somewhat of a game. In any case, let's use him to do something beyond decoy NOW. don't know if this what they're doing, but I wouldn't see the point of waiting to his role "on tape" if you have anything. Put it on tape and make someone prepare for while you build confidence and proficiency yourself by doing it. Make someone prepare to take him away.

I don't know what they're waiting on. The guy certainly seems worth getting the ball to 7-10 times in games like this for a run or catch or throw in his slash role.

Perhaps, there is just nothing to the "Q" - just a diversionary tactic, but I really hope not. That'd be weak. So, if it is something bring it NOW.

I think if anyone needs snaps at backup QB it's Sherrod Harris. I have nothing against John Chiles, and I'm certainly not a Harris "cultist", but I just think their talents would best used with Chiles as a receiver and Harris as backup QB.

Funny 3 years ago I dont remember anyone complaining about Nordgren not getting playing time. I agree that Chiles should've gotten to throw in the 4th q. I would rather him move to wr or something and let harris come in and be the backup. Besides, everyone knows Nordgren would have beat usc playing time or not anyway.

It seems as if everyone is pissed about Chiles not getting more pt in the Q package. Guess what, he's not out there because he's not good. It's as simple as that. He needs to realize that if he wants to play, change positions or get better. I dont want Chiles out there because I dont trust him.

Chiles needs to change positions or transfer. He isn't going to be a QB at Texas. Mack gave him more than a fair shot and the kid can't cut it at QB. He isn't going to beat out Colt and if Colt is injured, Harris will overtake Chiles as the replacement because he can actually pass.

He needs to move to where he can play, he has future at QB at Texas and especially in the NFL. Meanwhile, we could use someone his size and speed at safety in a bad way.
