IE Security Question

WhateverItTakes

Let me preface this by saying I hope this isn't an absolutely stupid or ridiculous question. From what I've read it sounds like a lot of the "Trojans"/"Phishers" detect your key strokes when you're on a particular site that require a user ID and password. Would it be possible to circurmvent these things by creating a file that contains your user ID and password. Then when you're on one of the sites, opening the file, copying the information and pasting it in the fields? It seems like they wouldn't be able to detect the keystrokes that way. Am I way off base here, or is that a reasonable alternative (albiet a little time consuming and aggravating).

First of all I (and CERT) advise that you switch to another browser such as firefox, trojans are the ones that normally install the keyloggers and IE and Active X is rife with insecurity.

Secondly if you are insanely paranoid about keyloggers I would recomend that you clean your system and download gator. It stores and encrypts your logins and passwords (and credit cards) so you just tell it to login and it does most of the work. However it is an extra bloated proces running and I do not know if it brings spyware of its own.

Lastly if your paranoia is keeping you awake at night then I would recomend switching to an OS with little or no trojans written for it. Mac OS X, GNU/Linux or GNU/*BSD.

Wow. That was a heckuva 1-2 punch.

Advising someone to download Gator? Holy hell, that may be the first time in the history of the Internet that this has been said by someone outside of the piece of **** company that distributes that piece of ****.

Damn I guess being away from the whole spyware world must have lowered my defenses, however I think it is more of a virtue than a curse, after some reading gator does have spyware, however it is no worse than Tivo, it tracks waht you see. If you can tolerate one why not the other? getting gator and using it is actually safer than what you people use.

I found another one without any spyware. Or at least marketed, I use KDE wallet.

Gator is spyware in the true sense of the word it installs GAIN wich is a marketing tool that invades your pricacy, is it ethical? no, but in terms of security it is a safer product than nothing. Privacy vs Security all passwords are encrypted locally. However there are better alternatives I guess.

If the keylogger is physical, it likely doesn't matter what OS you're running.

If the keylogger is already installed, how do you you enter your logins and passwords into your eWallet? Mind powers?

Man, I wish I had a nickel for every backpedal in this thread by linux. I would buy me a new R7 driver.

Look, dude comes on seeking some help. Your first teaspoon of medicine is Gator and MAC. Gator was not and is not anything you should ever wish on your enemy, let alone a fellow Horn. I don't care what it purports. As for MAC and UNIX, if the hack world really wanted to attack either of them, it would be done.

Zonealarm does a good job of controlling what you let your computer transmit out and let in. So you can set up which applications to allow to send data out to the internet, act as servers, etc. and which applications that you don't want sending out data to the net.

So when that keylogger tries to send out the data to the remote server, Zonealarm would theoretically pop up a warning asking if you want to let xxx application connect to ip address x.x.x.x port xx - at which pt you can refuse.

I suggest you spend some time here:

Major Geeks

Reading their virus and spyware forums. Also look at the spyware and security software listings, there's reviews and stuff. And there are some freeware encryption systems for storing sensitive stuff on your computer (if you must do that...).

And I would switch to Mozilla or Opera or some other browser..

GATOR??!!!!!????

linux - you have quite the potty mouth and this is more response than I'd normally give. But you issued the challenge on Gator to produce proof, so here is a sample.

It has privacy issues and security issues. It has been well known for a year. I only had to do one google to get 1,000 websites that repeat this to varying degrees. I figure they're probably just propaganda though to one so omniscient.

I'll retract my backpedal comment if you'll admit you don't what you're talking about with Gator.

Maybe I can buy you a beer someday. Or if not, who cares.

I have no problem about not knowing everything, I am not omniscient, I just find solace in that I know more about it than anybody that posted on this thread
