Ice Ice Baby (in Austin and CenTex tonight)

Well boys and girls, that maybe one inch of snow we were possibly looking at turned into an ice event! Sadly there is at least one fatality and possibly two as of 2 a.m.

Since temps won't be getting above freezing until later Friday afternoon I expect schools to not be open or at least on a delay. How are things in your hood?

Strange that our temps here in southeast Idaho are about the same as yours in Central Texas, except you're getting more frozen precip. It seems we only caught the flanks of that massive cold front that blasted its way through the center of the country.

At least 4 vehicles overturned on I-35 as of a couple of hours ago. All highways, flyovers and bridges shut down in San Antonio as of a couple of hours ago. Literally every single one. Wow.

I know that to people in areas that get this weather more often it seems trivial but keep in mind we are not used to this. Driving on ice is stupid no matter where you are but the way people drive in Austin it's a recipe for bad things.

Here is the link to the TxDot cameras for Austin. The choice is yours.

Oh, according to the KXAN, the upper deck is closed and stretches of 35 are parking lots for as far as the eye can see. Be careful and remember, OU sucks.

All the freeways are closed in San Antonio. Guess I'll have to stay home from work today. Damn!

Please don't go out driving today, probably not tomorrow either in Austin. I just walked out to the first stop sign, there is black ice in patches on the road. Then I walked over to the light at Shropshire and Dessau-about a dozen cars and pickups stuck there. They are just spinning their wheels trying to go up grades, especially the pickups. They have no traction.
A few years ago in a similar weather event, I waited until it was almost all melted, then drove across town. These two young non-licensed uninsured young girls got two wheels off the perfectly clean lane they were driving in, turned sideways and slid into my car, totaling it and injuring my girlfriend's daughter.
There are just too many idiots who have no concept of what to do when their car starts slipping and sliding out there. You should really stay home if at all possible for a couple of days.

True. At least if it is snow y'all have plows. I don't know how much of them if any TxDot has in their arsenal.

General, would you say that an upcoming thaw for the ice and snow is a thorn in your side? j/k

We're preparing for the worst!

effing stupid is what this is. i bought a flight 2 weeks ago to go to a career fair today at erwin. i live in chicago. i drive 80 mph for 40 miles with every highway and arterial street lane open after a storm deposited 20 inches of snow yesterday, none of which is melted, my street is still white with ice/snow, just to get to the airport to learn that the entire city of austin is shut down because they see some white stuff on the ground. pampered little babies.

You are such an up person!

There is no real reason that TxDot or Travis County should buy the equipment needed to better tend to a one or two day event every few years or even a decade apart. As a taxpayer and home owner I would put the kybosh on that in a heartbeat.

Sorry your plans got sidetracked but at least you did not miss the event since it will likely be rescheduled. You did not miss an opportunity to dazzle potential interviewers with your charm and contagious uplifting personality. There will likely be many other chances and maybe you can make it down then.

great, so they reschedule and i get to buy another ticket, course if the temperature drops below 40 watch out, the city of Austin ain't going outside.

Nah, they will go outside. They will have full goose down parkas and equipment for a trek to Antarctica but they will go out. They do this for 50 or below.

You don't get your money back for a future trip if they cancel it v. you just not showing up?

Sadly some people died in wrecks likely due to some angry asshat driving too fast. There always has to be that douchebag who drives fast in snowy or icy conditions. They think they are more important than others or something. I just saw some of the footage from the wrecks and they showed the sites of the fatalities. Sad.

the flight wasnt canceled, the actual event that i was attending was, so the airlines aren't really concerned. i didnt bother getting on the flight since there was nothing for me to do once i got there.

Don't you have friends in Austin to visit, to get Tex Mex with or catch a film at the Alamo or something? The weather was mostly to clear up by noon or sometime shortly thereafter. Just fly in, chill at the airport watching people freak the hell out and have a good trip to unwind a little (or a hell of a lot).

Make lemonade.

i was considering it, but the time between when i landed in austin and left was only 5-6 hours. with everything iced over, all it wouldve been was a 5-6 hour layover in the airport, which I do sometimes enjoy, but, i figured i could just have the day off here and let somebody else on standby get to go to austin in my seat since i am a frequent standby traveler and hate not making flights. plus, in some dark place in my mind i figured maybe not making the flight could possibly be a good thing (even though i was more likely to perish driving home than flying back and forth), but luckily that wasnt the case.

plus you know, its $40 to park for 12 hours at ohare, so i wasnt about to lose even more money.

You can park in my driveway for free next time and catch a bus for a buck to the Erwin Center. I live less than a mile from there. I will put a baggie of tacos and Topo Chico on the front porch for you. Please don't litter and make sure you put your Topo bottle in the recycling bin, you know, to keep it weird.

Makes sense since you had a quick turnaround. Doomed day from the get.

and to think I was bitter because I forgot to put on sunscreen before my morning run (in shorts and a t shirt) today.[/gloat]
